The third and greatly expanded edition of an early and important study of the history and literature of African Americans edited by noted educator editor and author W.E.B. Du Bois. It is almost certainly the first bibliography of African Americana compiled by an African American. This third edition was preceded by a first edition of only four pages in 1900 and a second edition of eleven pages in 1901 both published by Atlanta University in 1900. This bibliography was created and expanded by Du Bois at an early and highly productive phase of his long and distinguished career as a writer while he was researching and writing his seminal and highly-influential study THE SOULS OF BLACK FOLK published in 1903. The work opens with a short preface followed by a brief breakdown of the Tenth Atlanta Conference an annual academic event focused on African-American higher education the resolutions of said conference and a "Bibliography of Bibliographies of the Negro American." These sections are followed by the main two sections of the work. The first and most substantial portion is the titular "Select Bibliography of the Negro American" which runs thirty-six pages and lists notable African-American works alphabetically by author. The second major section lists prominent African-American periodicals also alphabetically. The final few pages are addenda to the two main sections. In his Preface Du Bois calls the work "imperfect" but thought it "better to print a poor bibliography of this great subject in the hope of bettering it in future editions than to wait longer for those better situated to do the work." The dedication reads: "To Keep the Memory of Phillis Wheatley David Walker Frederick Douglass William Wells Brown George Washington Williams and Paul Laurence Dunbar the Dead Pioneers." Another dedication lists Anthony Benezet Thomas Clarkson William Lloyd Garrison Benjamin Lundy Lydia Maria Child and Harriet Beecher Stowe "whose pens were mightier than the sword." Two much shorter editions preceded the present edition - numbering four and eleven pages respectively. This expanded work provides a much deeper selection of African-American literary and historical works. Though this expanded 1905 publication is the third edition of Du Bois's groundbreaking bibliography it is still the earliest of the three bibliographies of African Americans written by African Americans listed in Work's section titled "A Bibliography of Bibliographies on the Negro in the United States." It preceded both Schomburg's BIBLIOGRAPHICAL CHECKLIST OF AMERICAN NEGRO POETRY 1916 and Work's own NEGRO YEAR BOOK 1925. With its almost 30000 lots this was the largest sale ever held in any country up to 1725 a record not broken until the Thott sale Copenhagen: 1789-1795 and the Heber sales of the 1830s. The Du Bois sale lasted for nearly two months. This extraordinary library was the creation of the Abbé Jean-Paul Bignon 1662-1743 who was for many years secretary of the Académie des Sciences. When in 1718 he was appointed Bibliothécaire du Roi a position he occupied until 1741 he sold his library of approximately 50000 volumes in order to avoid a conflict of interest. The buyer was the financier John Law 1671-1729 of "Mississippi Bubble" fame. Financial reversals caused Law to almost immediately resell the library for 50000 livres to Cardinal Du Bois 1656-1723 the immensely rich but ill-famed first minister during the minority and under the reign of Louis XV his misdeeds may have been exaggerated by the Duc de Saint-Simon who hated him. Guigard and others state that Law's sale of the library took place in 1723 but it cannot have been later than December 1720 when Law secretly left France after the Mississippi Bubble had burst. Following Du Bois's death the library was sold for 65000 livres to "the booksellers of Paris" who immediately sold it to one "Guiton" who in turn sent it to The Hague for auction. This library contained many famous rarities including editiones principes of Aristophanes Homer and Pliny incunabula printed on vellum Spanish romances of chivalry and illuminated manuscripts. Many of the finest books and manuscripts were acquired by a collector named Milsoneau. The Marquis de Paulmy acquired them from Milsoneau and today they are the foundation of the library of the Arsenal. Fine set and priced throughout. ❧ Guigard I pp. 238-39 & 270-71. Peignot p. 96. In this somewhat scarce title Du Bois offered a significantly different view of from the standard academic view of Reconstruction at the time the Dunning School which contended that the period was a failure and downplayed the contributions of African Americans. Du Bois argued directly against these accounts emphasizing the important role and blacks played during the Civil War and Reconstruction. There are a few marks in pencil to the contents in an unknown hand. Expertly recased in black cloth with the original cloth preserved where extant - we acquired it without a rear board - and quite presentable. Without definitive proof of his ownership we have priced it for what it is a very uncommon signed first edition copy attractively restored. New York unknown books
