First edition of this curious and scarce illustrated children’s book in verse describing the unrequited love of a Japanese Ichimatsu doll for a lovely Parisian wax doll with flowing golden curls and subsequent rejection after he teaches himself English with an ABC primer. This book was published directly after the Japanese success in the Russo-Japanese War and at the height of the popularity of the interracial romance novels from Winnifred Eaton 1875-1954 a popular Chinese-American writer writing as Onoto Watanna a Japanese-American novelist including The Wooing of wisteria Heart of Hyacinth Love of Azalea and the very popular A Japanese Blossom published in 1906. The Ichimatsu dolls vary from copy to copy with each wearing different colour kimonos and appears to have been intended as a gift edition with box seen on the Altemus Boys and Girls’ Classics Series. Thurston fl. 1880-1941 illustrated a number of racially tinged works including When Squash-Boo found the Coco-nuts and for her well-known pirating of Helen Bannerman’s Little Black Sambo publishing a sequel in 1926 with her own illustrations. Copies complete with both original doll and gift box are quite rare. 199983817c1999. Presumed one of a number of multiple originals. Matryoshka. Very good. Approximately 6.5 inches tall and 3.25 inches wide. Andrew Morton's Monica's Story was published in early 1999 and as its cover is prominently displayed on the outer Bill Clinton doll. Thus 1999 is used as the date that this doll was produced. A political sex scandal involving US President Bill Clinton and 24-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky took place in 1998. Their sexual relationship lasted between 1995 and 1997. Clinton ended a televised speech in late January 1998 with the statement that he "did not have sexual relations with that woman Ms. Lewinsky." Further investigation led to charges of perjury and to the impeachment of Bill Clinton in 1998 by the U.S. House of Representatives. He was subsequently acquitted on all impeachment charges of perjury and obstruction of justice in a 21-day Senate trial. Clinton was held in civil contempt of court by Judge Susan Webber Wright for giving misleading testimony in the Paula Jones case regarding Lewinsky and was also fined $90000 by Wright. His license to practice law was suspended in Arkansas for five years; shortly thereafter he was disbarred from presenting cases in front of the United States Supreme Court. In addition to Monica Lewinsky there are dolls representing Paula Jones Gennifer Flowers and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. Gennifer Flowers born January 24 1950 nicknamed "Buffles" by schoolmates is an American author singer model actress former State of Arkansas employee and former TV journalist. In 1998 President Bill Clinton testified under oath that he had had a sexual encounter with Flowers. Matryoshka dolls also known as babushka dolls stacking dolls nesting dolls Russian tea dolls or Russian dolls are a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. The name matryoshka literally "little matron" is a diminutive form of the Russian female first name "Matryona" or "Matryosha". A set of matryoshkas consists of a wooden figure which separates at the middle top from bottom to reveal a smaller figure of the same sort inside which has in turn another figure inside of it and so on. The first Russian nested doll set was made in 1890 by wood turning craftsman and wood carver Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin who was a folk crafts painter at Abramtsevo. Traditionally the outer layer is a woman dressed in a sarafan a long and shapeless traditional Russian peasant jumper dress. The figures inside may be of any gender; the smallest innermost doll is typically a baby turned from a single piece of wood. Much of the artistry is in the painting of each doll which can be very elaborate. The dolls often follow a theme; the themes may vary from fairy tale characters to Soviet leaders. In the west matryoshka dolls are often referred to as babushka dolls babushka meaning "grandmother" or "old woman". In the late 1980s and early 1990s during Perestroika freedom of expression allowed the leaders of the Soviet Union to become a common theme of the matryoshka with the largest doll featuring then-current leader Mikhail Gorbachev. These became very popular at the time affectionately earning the nickname of a Gorba or Gorby the namesake of Gorbachev. With the periodic succession of Russian leadership after the collapse of the Soviet Union newer versions would start to feature Russian presidents Boris Yeltsin Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev. Most sets feature the current leader as the largest doll with the predecessors decreasing in size. The remaining smaller dolls may feature other former leaders such as Leonid Brezhnev Nikita Khrushchev Joseph Stalin Vladimir Lenin and sometimes several historically significant Tsars such as Nicholas II and Peter the Great. Yuri Andropov and Konstantin Chernenko rarely appear due to the short length of their respective terms. Some less-common sets may feature the current leader as the smallest doll with the predecessors increasing in size usually with Stalin or Lenin as the largest doll. Some sets that include Yeltsin preceding Gorbachev were made during the brief period between the establishment of President of the RSFSR and the collapse of the Soviet Union as both Yeltsin and Gorbachev were concurrently in prominent government positions. During Medvedev's presidency Medvedev and Putin may both share the largest doll due to Putin still having a prominent role in the government as Prime Minister of Russia. As of Putin's re-election as the fourth President of Russia Medvedev will usually succeed Yeltsin and preceded Putin in stacking order due to Putin's role solely as the largest doll. Political matryoshkas usually range between five and ten dolls per set. unknown

Square quarto 11 1/8 x 9 inches; 282 x 229 mm. 2 title verso blank 4 text four colored plates all interleaveddepicting various rooms in the house all with slots in which to place a selection of the four dolls with their fourteen dress wardrobe and eighteen objects all in their three original wood textured envelopes. The four colored scenes all have slots within which to place the dolls their dresses and various objects to complement the final picture. Publisher's dark blue cloth over pale blue boards the front cover with a large pasted-on illustration in full color depicting a cottage with three dogs on the foreground titled "La Maison des Poupées" and the publisher "G.M. et Cie A Capendu successeur." Explication page 3 translation "First of all start by cutting the leaves where the furniture is drawn and painted; Each item must be carefully cut with scissors. So we glue the furniture with liquid glue in their respective places as follows." The four scenes: 1. Salle à manger 2. Salon 3. Chambre à coucher 4. Cuisine The contents of the three envelopes: 1. 4 colored dolls 2. 14 colored dresses 3. 18 various accoutrements including a bouquet of flowers; a milk jug; a kettle; a tea service; a mixing bowl; a barrel; a mug a looking glass; a cooked turkey; five bread rolls on a plate etc. etc. A remarkable survivor the book and the three envelopes one with the four dolls one with the fourteen colored dresses and the third with the eighteen various objects all in very near fine condition. French movable book publisher Guérin-Müller pre-dated Capendu and was in business from 1850 to 1880. A. Capendu published many children's books including Cendrillon; Le Chat Botté; Le Petit Poucet and Contes de Fées. Exceptionally Rare with no copies located by OCLC - nine other titles in the series are listed; KVK locates just one example listed by Cooperative Library Network Berlin Brandenburg. Not in Cotsen.
