The first two works here contain portraits of beautiful women both real society belles and heroines of bestselling romances. The latter two transport the armchair traveller to the wilds of Wales to the Austrian and Italian Alps and to the Rhine River. Although in black and white the engravings are so detailed and finely executed particularly in the use of shadow and light that both portraits and landscapes come to life. In the days before photography--much less streaming videos--books like these brought beauty and imagination into everyday lives.</p>

Late 19th Century Cloth Binding 12mo; xlvii 643 32 pages 714 total 8 leaves of plates all present. 18 cm. <br> Early printing following the addition in 1855 three years earlier of a new section on "Foreign and Jewish Cookery;" That was also the first edition issued under the now-famous title Modern Cookery for Private Families.<br> Includes index and 32-page publisher's catalogue after text.<br> <br> Famously Lady Judith Montefiore published the first English-language Kosher cookbook The Jewish Manual in 1846 primarily for other Jewish housewives and meal planners. <br> Less than a decade later however leading British cookbook author Eliza Acton took Lady Montefiore's Jewish cooking tips one step further celebrating and normalizing them for cooks of all backgrounds across the Commonwealth through a new expanded edition of her best-selling cookbook Modern Cookery.<br> Journalist Rita Ehrlich notes that between these two works "The first Jewish recipes published in English reveal the place of accomplished Jewish women in 19th Century high society.<br> Among the welter of cookbooks published in 19th century England Eliza Acton's Modern Cookery for Private Families stands out for its clarity its practicality its occasional humour and its inclusion of Jewish food.<br> First published in 1845.The 1855 edition included a section on Foreign and Jewish Cookery and among the recipes was one for Jewish Almond Pudding. It was one of the few recipes Acton had not tested herself. Acton noted that 'all meat supplied by Jew butchers is sure to be of first-rate quality as they are forbidden by the Mosaic Law to convert into food any animal which is not perfectly free from all 'spot or blemish''. She also noted that the Jewish dietary laws which forbade the mixing of dairy and meat were 'not very rigidly observed' by most English Jews.<br> The date of that book is striking. Jews were part of English society by 1855 with a Jewish Lord Mayor of London Sir David Salomons a leader in the campaign to allow Jews to sit in Parliament. Lionel de Rothschild took his seat in Parliament in 1858 the year of this copy's publication following the passing of the Jews Relief Act. He had been elected a number of times; the sticking point had been the need to swear the oath 'upon the true Faith of a Christian'.<br> Even if we did not know about the number of wealthy highly regarded and influential Jews in London at that time the fact that an author would include specifically Jewish recipes and shopping advice in a bestselling cookbook that also recommended Jewish butchers for the quality of the meat suggests strongly that there was companionable social exchange.<br> The almond pudding recipe appeared in an earlier book published in 1846 called The Jewish Manual edited by A Lady no doubt the same lady who had entertained Eliza Acton. Five engravings in three columns 23.5 x 10 cms; on a single newspaper leaf 28.7 x 40.8 cm unrelated text on the verso lower margin creased with a small central tear affecting the caption no loss the image sin very good condition. Engravings from Harper's Weekly in November 1872 all centred on the quinine production in Darjeeling. Production began in the 1860s from seeds sent by the famed botanist Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker. Seven captioned wood engravings on two newspaper leaves from Harper's Weekly: six on one page each approx 10 x 11cms and one three-quarter page 30 x 22.5cms with related commentary sheet size 40 x 28cms small edge tear too the inner margin of the larger engraving no loss in all very good condition. The three-quarter page engraving "The Feast of Lanterns" includes a brief text article describing all the engravings in the lower margin which continues on the verso of sheet. As issued stitched into stiff paper covers with frontispiece and 5 additional inserted plates. Cover is light rubbed; some separation where the cover hinges at the stitching but the cover remains fairly stable; light foxing throughout. <br /> <br /> This is one of two 1810 imprints of this title the other Shaw & Shoemaker 19993 is self styled the "First American from the Second London Edition" and is sold by Wm. Charles and printed by W. McCullouch in 1810. While both Welch and Shaw & Shoemaker list this present edition by Johnson & Warner first it would stand to reason that the Charles edition is in fact first as this present edition has a title page dating publication at 1810 but the cover title is dated 1811. Nevertheless an early edition of this scarce title by Dorset who was "the younger daughter of Nicholas Turner and the sister of Charlotte Smith also a famous author. Very fine large engravings reproducing Italian paintings by the engravers Ludwig Kuhn Peter Halm Karl von Siegl Jakob Groh Wilhelm Krauskopf and Doris Raab. 43.3 x 30.4 cm plates heavy wove paper with wide margins each plate with a tissue guard captioned in red. Six folio plates. In very good condition some of the plates and tissues have a little edgewear or minor light soiling in no case effecting the printed images. Norton credited on the sheet as “I. T. Norton R.A.M. Composer & Director of the Music to the Chestnut St. Theatre.†Norton served as musical director at the Second Chestnut Street Theatre during the late 1820s a period when the house mounted a mixture of melodrama burletta opera excerpts and popular entertainments requiring resident musical supervision and arrangement. Theatre directors of music routinely composed incidental numbers glees and topical songs for stage performance and subsequent publication bridging the repertory of live performance and domestic music-making.<br /> <br /> Mister Punchinello! draws upon the well-known Punch and Judy puppet tradition. The text is lyrically straightforward built around the repeated refrain “Oh mamma I must be married to Mister Punchinello†suggesting a number intended for accessible vocal delivery rather than elaborate dramatic structure. The R.A.M. designation appended to Norton’s name—presented without elaboration on the imprint—appears as a professional credential typical of early nineteenth-century music publishing though he very well may have never attended the Royal Academy of Music.<br /> <br /> A representative survival from the intersection of Philadelphia theatre culture and early American sheet music production. OCLC locates only 12 copies in book form. Quarto sized 10" x 12" in blindstamped red cloth hardcovers stamped in gilt over black tape cloth spine. Unpaginated 46 pp. A uniquely designed geography/freading aid for young people that instead of maps features a full page of small hieroglyphic engravings for each descriptive word or group of words that illustrated notable facts places names etc. for each of the states covered. For example for Maine one small item is "The minerals are" with a small engraving of a handiron "granite" small picture of a rock; "More engraving of a ship are built here than in any other State". Each hieroglyphic page is followed by a single page of text of desciptive text which which is an non-illustated transcription of the the illustrated page. Covers well soiled though the gilt titling is still bright. Some tape stains to the dark brown endpapers front hinge split but all pages firmly attached; dampstaing to the lower aprox. quarter of all pages. Frontisplate 59 other steel-engraved plates lacking pl.50 Sisyphus originally engraved on copper in 1815 by Franz St ber 1795-1858. Large octavo 24cm x 15.5cm newer linen-spined boards with old paper relaid on covers and spine has title but lacks original paper at spine head and foot. Unpaginated but each numbered plate has tissue guard and facing leaf of text in German to explain each myth. Lacks plate 50 maybe cut out by censor. Some foxing and light marginal damp marks at gutter not touching engraved part of plates. The steel-engraved images of gods nymphs and heroes are quite small 9.5cm x 6.5cm printed on strong paper at centre of each plate but of very fine quality and detail. They are closely based on similarly numbered copperplate engravings by Franz Xaver St ber first published Vienna 1815 in similar large octavo format but with completely different anonymous German text. The detail of these later steel engravings only differs from St ber's original 1815 copperplates by covering up some female breasts better to comply with 1840s more prudish moral code. They still retain the strongly erotic impression given by many of the originals thus helping to maintain their popularity over more than 25 years. Mayer & Compagnie 3rd revised edition. hardcover

1809Flo541<p>Very good copy of the first edition of this classic of equestrian humour</p><p>With 26 of 29 handcoloured copperplate engravings by Thomas Rowlandson after illustrations by George Moutard Woodward and Henry Bunbury unsigned</p><p>The illustrations show Regency gents falling off horses ladies falling off horses gamblers pursued by officers of the debtors' prisons raggedy dogs yokel fashions and furniture famous beauties etc.</p><p>The 26 plates include: portrait of <em>Caleb Quizem Esq. title page vignette with courtier falling from Pegasus The Maid of Mim; Costume of Hogs Norton: Morning dress</em>; <em>Game Wigs</em> 2 plates;<em> Hounds</em> 2 plates; <em>Mathematical Horsemanship</em> 6 plates; <em>The True Method of Sitting on a Horse Mathematically Delineated; How to Vault from the Saddle; Fashionable Furniture at Hogs Norton</em> 2 plates; and <em>The Bailiffs Hunt</em> 8 plates.</p><p>Lacks the folding plate <em>The Bucephalus Riding Academy for Grown Gentlemen</em> and two other plates <em>Costume of Hogs Norton: A Back Front View of Miss Dickinson's new Dress</em> and <em>How a Man may Shoot his own Wig.</em></p><p>George Murgatroyd Woodward 1765–1809 more commonly known as George "Moutard" or "Mustard" Woodward was an English caricaturist and humourist. He was a friend collaborator and drinking companion of Thomas Rowlandson who engraved many of his prints.</p><p>Thomas Rowlandson 1757-1827 was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian and Regency eras noted for his ribald satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker his most famous works include <em>The Miseries of Human Life </em>1808 <em>The Tours of Dr. Syntax</em> 1812-21 <em>Microcosm of London</em> 1810 <em>The English Dance of Death</em> 1815 <em>Military Adventures of Johnny Newcome</em> 1815 <em>History of Johnny Quae Genus</em> 1822 <em>The English Spy</em> 1826 etc.</p><p>The pseudonym Caleb Quizem is often attributed to the artist George Moutard Woodward. The portrait however links the author to Geoffrey Gambado i.e. Francis Grose. In the picture a corpulent man sits in an armchair looking at the viewer through a monocle. Two books Gambado's <em>Annals of Horsemanship </em>a popular book attributed to Grose reissued with Rowlandson's engravings in 1809 and Laurence Sterne's <em>Tristam Shandy</em> are on the table next to him and a portrait of Gambado with gouty foot and crutch hangs on the wall.</p><p>Quite scarce copies held by the British Library and Oxford University.</p><p>Bound in full red morocco leather spine with five raised bands gilt title and decoration to compartments front board with 2cm scratch to leather TEG marbled endpapers book block solid. 1814177240Printed for William Daniell by Thomas Davison. 1814. 17 uncoloured aquatint plates mounted on India paper tissue-guards textblock complete but front and rear boards are disbound and only a fragment of the spine remains with the stamp of the library of the University of Pennsylvania on the front paste-down and blind stamped throughout but not affecting the plates. Marbled endpapers all edges gilt slight water stains to some pages edges browned but the plates are clean. 42.5 x 33.5cm. A very good example of Orientalist art. Robert Smirk 1752. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1786 became an associate in 1792 and in the same year an academician. Most of his paintings are small.Those for the story of the Hunch-back engraved by Daniell were in his happiest manner. He died in London 1845.
