One of 240 copies duodecimo size 126 pp. "Woodwork" contains twenty-one wood engravings of tools by the inimitable Eric Gill 1882-1940; a highly regarded printmaker sculptor and typographer as well as a complicated man Gill provided illustrations for numerous fine press publications by the Golden Cockerel Press and the Saint Dominic's Press as well as with Pepler under the imprint of the St. Dominic's Press.<br /> <br /> An informative look at the art of carpentry by craftsman-woodworker Arthur Romney Green 1872-1945 who like Gill and Pepler was influenced by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. The magnificent engravings depict numerous Biblical scenes as well as the ancient coins of the period; the Enoch Hebrew Assyrian Phoenician Egyptian Copte Armenian and Chinese alphabets; astronomical observations; views of Jerusalem; scrolls and writing instruments; the first 13 Assyrian kings; footwear in Antiquity; mosaic floor tiles; Solomon's Temple etc. Moderate and sporadic rubbing along edges. Gold partly and slightly faded on spines. Light and minor water-staining along margin of very first leaves in first volume. Title page remargined not affecting text. Front free endpaper fly-leaf additional engraved title and title of second volume slightly and partly chipped along edges not affecting text or illustration. William Hamilton RA 1751 - 1801:RA Collection: People and Organisations.Born in Chelsea West London in 1751 Hamilton spent time studying in Italy before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1769. Although he had previously studied architectural draughtsmanship he chose to pursue painting at this time. He exhibited four paintings at the Royal Academy in 1774 and by 1789 was elected as a Royal Academician. In the early part of his career Hamilton focused on portraitur but he later began to paint subjects from poetry history and the Bible.Hamilton was also employed by print galleries to illustrate popular themes and literature. His representations of Shakespearean scenes were not well-received but his rural scenes were fashionable. Perhaps the most popular of these were his illustrations to James Thomson’s The Seasons 1730. This poem describes rural Britain and reflects on the role nature plays as an intermediary between Heaven and Earth. Hamilton’s illustrations such as The Monarch Swain were published in 1797 engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi RA and P.W. Tomkins. There is a copy of the book in the Royal Academy Library. 18th Century unknown

Part I is 1000 pages and is very good with faint dampstains to the lower corners of pages 993-1000 very minor worming to the bottom of one folding table short closed tear to one map. Part II has some edgewear and small area of worming to the outer edge of the front cover 28 1024 pages margins of two folding maps trimmed a little closely. The engraving depicts inscriptions and relief carvings found on the staircases of Persepolis the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire in modern-day Iran. These carvings showcase royal inscriptions symbolic figures and decorative motifs reflecting the empire's grandeur and artistic sophistication. The hieroglyphics and characters likely represent Old Persian Elamite and Babylonian script which were commonly used in Achaemenid inscriptions. The engraving was printed 1747 in London by T. In a lavish full brown morocco binding with five raised bands and ornate gilt stamping to spine borders on covers wide turn-ins and beautifully patterned endsheets; all edges gilt. Near Fine with a light amount of rubbing to joints spines lightly faded a scuff to the front cover of Volume II and small former owner bookplates of noted collector Abel E. Berland to the front pastedowns. Pine's Latin text was based on Talbot's 1699 edition and is remarkable for being entirely illustrated with engraved copper plates throughout the text.
