This is a very good hardcover copy in the original marbled paper-covered boards with the title-page print reproduced and tipped-on to the front cover. Leather spine tooled in gilt with an elaborate device and title. Covers rubbed, edge wear and wear to top and bottom of spine. The map of Paris and 60 engravings (complete) are generally clean, but some light foxing and soil. Beautifully engraved plates ca.1820, engraved by Couche fils, depict well known monuments in Paris as well as other parts of France. Most plates are of Paris. Now in a mylar wrap in the French style. Oblong 8vo, 5 1/2" high X 8" wide. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

Clean very tight pages with unmarked rubbed marbled boards and well-rubbed edges, foxing to end papers and a few other pages and dusty page edges. Gilt lettered leather spine and corners rubbed and top of spine slightly frayed. 528pp. The characters, descriptions and uses of the animals from the Adive (similar to a Jackal) to the Zorilla (or African skunk). Excellent figure engravings on wood by Thomas Bewick.
Ink mark to page 45 of Part II and a few fingermarks. No other added marks or inscriptions. No creasing to covers. A tight page block with foxing to dusty edged pages, well rubbed full-leather boards, edges and spine with surprisingly clear intact maroon title block to spine. Front board held just by binding cords and front end paper present but loose. Some loss to lower edge of title page. In 1854 he made his last trip to the Holy Land; he died of fever on board a French ship on his return voyage to England. Bartlett's primary concern was to extract the picturesque aspects of a place and render "lively impressions of actual sights", as he wrote in the preface to "The Nile Boat" (London, 1849). His work became widely known through the numerous engravings after the original drawings and paintings he made. The interest in these engravings today is as much for the exquisite quality of the rendering and presentation of the architecture of the period, as it is for the representation of the landscape. Published in 1836 by Peter Jackson, Late Fisher, Son & Co. of London, it was originally accompanied by descriptions written by John Carne.
