Very fine large engravings reproducing Italian paintings by the engravers Ludwig Kuhn Peter Halm Karl von Siegl Jakob Groh Wilhelm Krauskopf and Doris Raab. 43.3 x 30.4 cm plates heavy wove paper with wide margins each plate with a tissue guard captioned in red. Six folio plates. In very good condition some of the plates and tissues have a little edgewear or minor light soiling in no case effecting the printed images. A VERY HANDSOME COLLECTION OF GERMAN ENGRAVINGS BASED ON ITALIAN RELIGIOUS ART OF THE SIXTEENTH AND SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES. The six plates included are: 1. Doris Raab 1851-1899â€”a fascinating female German engraver. The Christ with the Four Evangelistsâ€ aka â€œThe Resurrection of Our Lordâ€ after the painting in the collection of the Galleria Palatina Palazzo Pitti Florence executed in 1516 by Fra Bartolommeo. 2. Peter Halm 1854-1923. Madonna Enthroned aka Madonna and Child after a circa 1505 painting by Giovanni Bellini. 3. Ludwig Kuhn 1859-1936 Madonna of the Pesaro Family after the painting in the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice executed by Titian circa 1519. 4. Jakob Groh 1855-1917 Madonna and Child aka "Pitti Tondo" by Michael Angelo Buonarroti reproduced from the marble bas-relief at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence executed sometime around 1504. 5. Wilhelm Krauskopf 1847-1921 Descent From the Cross "Espagnolet" reproduced from the original in the Museo Nazionale di San Martino in Naples by Jusepe de Ribera in circa 1588 6. Some fingermarks and general grubbiness throughout slight spotting to text and plates a couple of plates with neat paper repairs to rear. The copper plates mostly clean and bright one with partial handcolour by a previous owner.Still a fun trot throught the miseries of horse-riding in the late 18th century W. Baynes hardcover

The portrait however links the author to Geoffrey Gambado i.e. Francis Grose. In the picture a corpulent man sits in an armchair looking at the viewer through a monocle. Two books Gambado's Annals of Horsemanship a popular book attributed to Grose reissued with Rowlandson's engravings in 1809 and Laurence Sterne's Tristam Shandy are on the table next to him and a portrait of Gambado with gouty foot and crutch hangs on the wall.Quite scarce copies held by the British Library and Oxford University.Bound in full red morocco leather spine with five raised bands gilt title and decoration to compartments front board with 2cm scratch to leather TEG marbled endpapers book block solid. Interior clean and bright all copperplates under tissue guards with vivid handcolour.Engraved armorial bookplate of Herman Le Roy Edgar a New York real-estate broker amateur photographer and book collector 1865-1938.Very good copy of this rare classic of horsey fun. FAUST - Rare Bound Set - without any text

1826ABE-90785021091826 Faust was Goethe's most celebrated creation with international editions in his lifetime and subsequently in films and books across the world with translations in most languages. This is a complete set of the 26 engravings Moritz Retzsh produced as an illustration of Goethe's text; the book has no words in it not even a publisher or date. What it does have is a fabulous set of the original plate pulls complete with plate marks. Friedrich August Moritz Retzsch was a German painter draughtsman and etcher; much celebrated in his day. This is in a way a fine example of what would now called a graphic novel. The 26 etched pictures tell the story and words are not needed. In Germany there were many such books without words and this one in particular influenced the English Pre Raphaelites. This volume is in its original binding with a very fragile leather spine which turns around to the original marbled cover boards which are also in a fragile state. There is no title page or date and no publishing house is mentioned. The corners are leather also and the spine has five subtly raised bands and no title. A much poorer copy of this was featured in the exhibition of Pre Raphaelites at Tate Britain. My copy is considerably better but it is by no means a fine one. It has been used and looked at probably a great deal over the last 200 years or so. The leather is very worn the marbled cover boards are patinated and there is a mixture of hand written names and an inscription on the front end paper. It is very rare in any state at all because it was easily broken up so the plates could be framed. This is I must stress a complete bound full set and as such it is very rare indeed. The earlier of the two dated inscriptions states 1826; but it cannot be viewed as an accurate issue date. An edition exists which has a German title page and text but this is not one of those. It's a bit of a mystery. The exhibited copy in the Tate exhibition was inspected by me I knew one of the curators and it was also without any text. International Edition. Hardcover. Contents Very Clean Light Foxing To A Few Plates But Almost All Are Entirely Clean And With Clean Intact Tissue Guards. Wordsworth Was The Youngest Son Of The Rev. Dr. Christopher Wordsworth Master Of Trinity And A Nephew Of The Poet William Wordsworth. He Was The Younger Brother Of The Classical Scholar John Wordsworth And Charles Wordsworth Bishop Of Saint Andrews Dunkeld And Dunblane. He Was Educated At Winchester And Trinity Cambridge. Like His Brother Charles He Was Distinguished As An Athlete As Well As For Scholarship. He Won The Chancellor's Gold Medal For Poetry In 1827 And 1828. He Became Senior Classic And Was Elected A Fellow And Tutor Of Trinity In 1830; Shortly Afterwards He Took Holy Orders. He Went For A Tour In Greece In 1832-1833 And Published Various Works On Its Topography And Archaeology The Most Famous Of Which Is "Wordsworth's" Greece 1839. In 1836 He Became Public Orator At Cambridge And In The Same Year Was Appointed Headmaster Of Harrow A Post He Resigned In 1844. In 1844 Sir Robert Peel Appointed Him As A Canon Of Westminster 1844-1869. He Was Vicar Of Stanford In The Vale Berkshire 1850-1869 And Archdeacon Of Westminster 1864-1869.
