Hopwood pursued her academic studies in Spanish and German at Aberystwyth University graduating with first-class honours and later earned a doctorate in German literature from University College London. Her career encompasses roles as a lecturer in German at the University of Wales Swansea and as a creative writing tutor. In October 2020 she was appointed Professor of Welsh and Celtic Studies at Aberystwyth University. Throughout her career Hopwood has been honoured with numerous awards including the Crown at the National Eisteddfod in 2003 and the Prose Medal in 2008. In 2018 she was elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. Beyond her literary accomplishments she has contributed to Welsh-language television as a presenter and has been actively involved in promoting the Welsh language and culture.
