Foxing to page edges and somewhat throughout a nearly fine copy in a very good dust jacket from the Grosset & Dunlap photoplay tie-in edition for the 1926 film with edge wear with some shallow chips and several small closed tears foxing to the verso with some bleed through mostly to the rear panel. Small bookplate of late collector John Ruyle affixed to front paste-down. 30912. In 1920 Rinehart's 1908 mystery thriller THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE was adapted into a very popular play The Bat by Rinehart and Avery Hopwood. The 1926 silent film The Bat directed by Roland West and starring Jack Pickford and Louise Fazenda was based on Rinehart and Hopwood's play. The play was also the basis for a 1930 film also done by Roland West The Bat Whispers which features a black shrouded arch-criminal. Comic-book creator Bob Kane said in his 1989 autobiography BATMAN AND ME that the villain of the 1930 film The Bat Whispers was an inspiration for his character Batman. George H. Doran unknown

This dummy copy includes the first eight pages of text with the remaining pages being blanks. Library of Congress text: Charlotte Corday born Marie-Anne-Charlotte Corday d'Armont was born in Normandy on July 27 1768 and was executed on July 17 1793 in Paris. Corday is buried at Chapelle Expiatoire in the 8th arrondissement in Paris. Interestingly this cemetery is dedicated to Marie Antoinette and her husband King Louis XVI although they are buried elsewhere. .She is largely remembered as the assassin of French Revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat while he rested in his bath at home. She was born into a poor but noble family in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alps region in the south east of France but she was being educated in Caens which is in Normandy in the North. She began going to political meetings there and became inspired by the ideas of the Revolution and in particular the Girondin faction. The Girondins were a more moderate faction that was in favor of a Constitutional government. They represented the educated provincial middle class of France lawyers merchants etc. and they stood against the "Paris mob" who tended to be in line with the opposing political party the Jacobins. Corday felt that the Jacobins were too radical and she wanted to save the Revolution by eliminating their most popular leader Jean-Paul Marat. With this in mind she traveled to Paris and insisted on seeing Marat promising either to divulge the names of traitors of the Revolution or to plead for the lives of her Girondin acquaintances historical records disagree on her ostensible reason for meeting with Marat.Regardless of how she managed to gain access to Marat she was allowed in while he was bathing he suffered from a skin condition and she plunged a knife directly into his heart causing his instant death. She was arrested immediately and soon found guilty and guillotined. All accounts attest to a brave and dignified death. The assassination of Marat was memorialized in the famous painting Death of Marat by Jacques-Louis David which hangs in the Louvre. Initially her violent act scandalized Paris and some felt it reflected poorly on women revolutionaries. Many women distanced themselves from her for this reason. Her intention to weaken the power of the Jacobins was a failure. Marat gained martyr status overnight and the Girondins as a faction were demonized and eliminated during the subsequent Jacobin-led Terror. However she lives on in France's popular memory through numerous works of art poetry plays and literature. She was given the moniker the "angel of assassination" by French writer Alphonse de Lamartine who dedicated part of his series Histoire des Girondins 1847 to her. Regardless of her political views Charlotte Corday changed the way women were viewed during the Revolution in terms of personal agency and having the courage of one's convictions.Provenance: Sophie Renard Chateau-Thierry. 02400 Brasles France. Inscribed by the author opposite the title-page: “Daisy from the Author†and Hopwood’s signature appears on the tail of the final leaf as well. With a loosely inserted handwritten poem from the author titled ‘Let’s’ and beginning with the line ‘There need’nt sic be dissensions and there need’nt be unrest.†This appears to be an original and unpublished work from the author. In addition in what appears to be a separate hand there is a small handwritten “Plan of Homograph†page potentially excised from a separate work with 14 small watercolor illustrations of a sailor making code with a wand and sheet. The verso features a description of signals to be utilized at night. Bound in full tan morocco by Alfred de Sauty featuring a signature Arts & Crafts-style de Sauty design with the title of the book to the front center board surrounded with a roundel of gilt flowers and leaves. On top and bottom there are small circular ornaments with similar floral & leaf tooling. Small inlaid green dots accent the design. Five bands to spine with title to second compartments and small gilt clover to remaining compartments. Gilt-ruled turn-ins with de Sauty’s standard grey endpapers. All edges gilt. With the publisher’s original thick paper wraps bound in at rear. Bookplate of Egerton Parker to the front pastedown. Measures approx. 5.5†x 8.25.†Some toning to board perimeters with some light spots to front board and a darker mark to rear board. Spine toned bumping to corners of rear board. This is quite a wonderful package including a nice presentation by the author a highly decorated Navy officer acclaimed in 1941 a “poet laureate of the Royal Navy†by Time Magazine. Time gave this collection of poetry “precedence among Navy men even over Kipling’s ‘If’ due to its inclusion of good-natured military advice.†Very good with some light spotting as mentioned to covers.
