Jeans and Arthur Eddington are considered the founders of British cosmology. <br /> <br /> Sir James Hopwood Jeans was an English physicist mathematician and astronomer who made significant contributions in many areas of physics stellar evolution quantum theory and the theory of radiation. Jeans was awarded the Franklin Medal based upon his contributions to cosmology particularly those of the late 1920s. As early as 1923 Jeans wrote "Astronomy does not know whether or not life is important in the scheme of nature but she begins to whisper that life must necessarily be somewhat rare" Jeans 1923 30. <br /> <br /> By the late 1920s Jeans's view had solidified. "The numbers varied somewhat but always present in his work was the basic scenario that the stars are sparsely scattered in space close encounters exceedingly rare and the conditions for life very exacting" Jeans 1930 335. "In 1928 Jeans was the first to conjecture a steady state cosmology based on a hypothesized continuous creation of matter in the universe. Foxing to page edges and somewhat throughout a nearly fine copy in a very good dust jacket from the Grosset & Dunlap photoplay tie-in edition for the 1926 film with edge wear with some shallow chips and several small closed tears foxing to the verso with some bleed through mostly to the rear panel. Small bookplate of late collector John Ruyle affixed to front paste-down. 30912. Octavo pp. i-iv v-vi vii-viii 9-319 320: blank original decorated orange cloth front and spine panels stamped in black. In 1920 Rinehart's 1908 mystery thriller THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE was adapted into a very popular play The Bat by Rinehart and Avery Hopwood. The 1926 silent film The Bat directed by Roland West and starring Jack Pickford and Louise Fazenda was based on Rinehart and Hopwood's play. The play was also the basis for a 1930 film also done by Roland West The Bat Whispers which features a black shrouded arch-criminal. Comic-book creator Bob Kane said in his 1989 autobiography BATMAN AND ME that the villain of the 1930 film The Bat Whispers was an inspiration for his character Batman. George H. Doran unknown
1926BBS-2010370Grosset & Dunlap 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable/Poor. First edition thus; first Photoplay edition in scarce original jacket illustrating a scene from the 1926 film. First published in the same year by George H. Doran Company and retains the Doran copyright page. Based on a play the authors wrote in 1920 which was itself a dramatization of Rinehart's 1907 novel 'The Circular Staircase.' Yellow cloth with black titles and decoration cloth clean and bright with light edgewear some toning to top and bottom edges bumped spine tips. Spine square. Binding sound. Dust jacket in poor condition with moderate to heavy edgewear including chipping at spine tips and fore-edge corners. The front hinge and front fore-edge of the DJ are worn delicate enough that they are nearly split with rear fore-edge sporting an early tape repair. There are additionally two scars to the front panel about 1 in each and one to the rear where the surface has been scraped. The one at rear panel obscures the publisher's list of books. Despite its flaws the jacket is not unattractive; the illustration at front panel is mostly whole and the DJ is protected in Mylar. Endsheets have a few spots of staining with one small hole in final page that looks like insect damage. Prior owner's inscriptions in ink at both paste downs and RFEP and another P/O's information rubber-stamped at front paste down. Text unmarked. Pages toned. Photographs available upon request. The 1926 film was the first of three adaptations of this Rinehart story the next of which - 1930's 'The Bat Whispers' - according to comic creator Bob Kane played a role in inspiring the character of Batman.
