329 p. + Two frontis lithographs produced by Sarony, Major and Knapp from ambrotypes. Damp stained. 12mo. 19 cm. Original full cloth binding, faded. A wonderful descriptive account of travel in Nova Scotia. In addition to observations on the Anglo/French culture of the Acadians, there are many interesting historical remarks, including comments on the Negroes of Nova Scotia. Cozzens was a curious character. He was the author of the popular 'Sparrowgrass Papers', and was well known as a humorist. His primary business was as an "importer, and dealer in wines, brandies, segars, and fine groceries, agent for the sale of Longworth's Ohio wines, No. 85 Chambers Street, two doors from the Irving House and Broadway, New York." Around 1856 he was also an auctioneer selling "rare and choice old wines , selected and imported by J. B. Monnot, late of the New York Hotel." "I do not think that an Acadian would cheat, lie, or steal; I know that the women are virtuous, and if I had a thousand pounds in my pocket I could sleep with confidence in any of their houses, although all the doors were unlocked and everybody in the village knew it." - 'A Month With the Blue Noses' (p. 60). **PRICE JUST REDUCED! RARE unique collection of 71 copper engravings by renowned Scottish artist William Home Lizars (W.H.Lizars), who was made famous through the painting-like quality of his engravings. His works are well known to book collectors, as he provided a great deal of Sir Walter Scott's books with illustrations and vignettes. Most of the engravings in this volume depict Scottish landscape and landmarks. Additionally, the volume contains views of London, Dublin and Edinburgh, several portraits, genre paintings and illustrations to Tobias Smollett's "The Adventures of Roderick Random". Each page contains a single engraving, and is followed by a sheet of protective wax-paper. français Affiche lithographiée recto-verso, en 2 feuilles rempliée 91x116 cm. 1 Sheet Double Sided, Size: H 116cm x W 91cm. "This eightfold issue marks the tenth anniversary of the Chronicle by yielding to a long-standing temptation to make a print of (Imagerie d'Epinal) life-sized figures spread over twosheets ; and to assemble a selection of drawings on merit only. Nevertheless, a tentative theme emerges : a shifting division and reversal of roles ; the peace-searching haves of the West (embracing Russia), who bring forth abnegate youth, and the militant have-nots of Asia and Africa-Diogenes with his lamp and Alexander in arms. Another anniversary : the Birth of Hokusai, more-or-less two hundred years ago, whose MANGA ("Drawings from life" were ublished regularly in twelve volumes until his death at 89, and continued posthumously - fifteen volumes in all." Quelques petites coupures sur les bords. Peu courant.
