Man kennt ihn in Südamerika ebenso wie in Rußland oder China. Trotzdem ist sein eigentlicher Schöpfer bis heute einer breiten Öffentlichkeit weitgehend unbekannt. Gottfried Helnwein, der Donald zum ersten Mal mit 4 Jahren begegnet ist und dies als seine erste Begegnung mit einer großen Kultur bezeichnet, hat sich auf die Suche gemacht, den Mann zu finden, dessen Name lange Zeit unbekannt war und den man daher einfach nur den „guten Zeichner“ nannte, den Mann, der aus der Ente einen Menschen gemacht hatte. Vor etwa 10 Jahren traf er Carl Barks zum ersten Mal in seinem bescheidenen Haus in den Bergen von Oregon, wo dieser seit langem zurückgezogen lebt. Helnwein arbeitet seitdem daran, Carl Barks und dessen Werk in einer umfassenden Retrospektive zu zeigen. Er hat zahlreiche Arbeiten zusammengetragen und viele Details über die Arbeitsweise dieses Künstlers recherchiert. Dieses Buch soll veranschaulichen, was für ein grandioser Zeichner und Geschichtenerzähler Barks ist und wie er seine neue Bildersprache entwickelt hat, die Generationen geprägt und inspiriert hat. In einem Gespräch mit Gottfried Helnwein, 1992 in Oregon, erzählt Carl Barks seinen Werdegang, — wann er seine erste Ente gezeichnet hat, und über die Schwierigkeiten, die er in den Disney-Studios bekam, als Donald ein erotisches Abenteuer hatte. Beiträge des Comicexperten Carsten Laqua, des Disney-Zeichners Ulrich Schröder und des Donald- Forschers Andreas Platthaus analysieren Barksens Kunst des „Storytelling“ und die Entwicklung und Wandlung seines Zeichenstils. Aber auch den Einfluß der deutschen Übersetzerin Erika Fuchs, die durch ihre genialen Sprachkreationen (Schmatz) - das Barksche Werk zu einem neuen Höhepunkt geführt hat. Aber mehr als an jede theoretische Analyse glaubt Helnwein an das sinnliche Erleben, er läßt vor allem die Bilder selbst sprechen, er holt wichtige Details aus den Geschichten und vergrößert sie, stellt Zusammenhänge her und macht auf viele Aspekte und Einzelheiten in der Arbeit von Carl Barks aufmerksam, die bei oberflächlicher Lektüre der Comics oft übersehen werden. Dieses Buch soll den Blick für die subtilen Qualitäten und Zwischentöne dieses grafischen Werks schärfen - es soll gleichsam eine Schule des Sehens sein.
