Hardcover, 18 x 24 cm, 368 pp. Printed on glossy paper, illustrated. 27 chapters about "The Classification of MDS and myeloproliferative disorders in children", "Pitfalls in cyto-histology of pediatric MDS/JMML", "Molecular biology of hematopoietic cells in MDS: an evolutionary perspective", "The importance of bone marrow histology in MDS" and many other matters. Various contributors. From the editors: "The last decade has seen a surge of interest in pediatric myelodysplastic diseases and a number of initiatives to improve registration, diagnosis, and management have been launched. An increasing number of publications have appeared but no book has as yet compiled the many aspects of myelodysplastic diseases in children. This book has contributions from the major researchers and groups involved in the study of myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative disorders in children. It is composed of three introducing chapters on classification and epidemiology followed by detailed discussion of the many aspects of MDS and JMML. The last chapters present the experiences from a number of study groups worldwide describing their achievements in the study of this intriguing group of diseases. The book reflects out current knowledge on myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders including some controversies. In a field moving rapidly towards new accomplishments discrepancies in interpretation of the data will invariably exist. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with this distinguished group of authors. We hope hematologists, pediatric oncologists, and laboratorial professionals will find the book useful in clinical practice and an inspiring basis for further research."

This text reviews the latest ideas in tumor biology, explains the pharmacologic basis of the agents used, and discusses how they are applied in clinical practice. Part One presents an overview of the clinical importance of endocrine therapy, and describes the applications of the principal classes of drugs, including antiestrogens, aromatase inhibitors, progestins, and progesterone receptor antagonists. This section also discusses ovarian ablation. Part Two deals with the biological aspects of endocrine therapies, and relates current understanding of tumor biology and the pharmacologic basis of hormonal agents to their clinical applications. Among the topics covered are resistance and sensitivity to therapy. Part Three outlines future strategies, in particular the use of combination endocrine therapy, adjuvant growth factor therapy and the use of anti - invasive agents. This text is essential for oncologists and pharmacologists alike. Clean Copy

2002014692London: Kluwer Academic Publishers 2002. Cloth. Like New/Like New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book Hepatocellular carcinoma HCC and cholangiocarcinoma CC both increasing in incidence have become a major topic of basic and clinical research as well as clinical practice in hepatology. Experts in the field update the current concepts on the carcinogenesis of HCC and CC such as genetic alterations in the pathways of cell cycle and apoptosis regulation the hypothesis of dedifferentiation of hepatocytes to the malignant phenotype vs that of activation of hepatic progenitor cells incapable of maturation maturation arrest hypothesis. In spite of an increasing number of genetic alterations described in human HCC as well as cell regulatory pathways tested in experimental HCC models the key hits causing progression of the cell cycle in imbalance with apoptosis tissue invasive growth and metastatic potential of cell clones still remain elusive. Very powerful genomic and proteomic techniques are promising insights into the carcinogenesis of liver malignancies that will allow more efficient therapeutic strategies. The current concepts on risk profiling surveillance of risk groups and therapeutic strategies are evidence-based for HCC and less detailed for CC. Surveillance of risk groups improves detection of liver tumours in curable stages. Best strategies for curative treatment of HCC use neoadjuvant antitumour therapies before liver transplantation and a role is emerging for living donor-related liver transplantation. New palliative therapies for HCC are in the experimental stage with biological response modifiers including angiogenesis inhibitors and entering phase II clinical trials with the alpha-fetoprotein derived vaccines.211pp.N.B.Slight fade mark to base of d/j spine.
