The elder Meigs was the long-time Chair of Obstetrics at the Jefferson Medical College 1841-1861 a widely- published authority in his field and the first to diagnose embolism as a cause of sudden death in childbed 1849; however he is best remembered today for two significant failures: first his opposition to the use of anesthesia in childbirth hewing to the then-popular view that the pain and trauma of childbirth were the true source of the maternal bond; second refusal to endorse sanitary technique in delivery arguing that doctor's hands could not transmit post-partem uterine infections because "doctors are gentlemen and gentlemen's hands are clean" see Graham Eternal Eve: the History of Gynaecology and Obstetrics pp.397-400. This Memoir uncommon; only five physical locations noted in WorldCat no other copies noted in commerce. Lindsay & Blakiston unknown

203 pages including index and several black and white photographic plates. Gives an up-to-date approach to an ancient art, in which hypnosis is regarded as a potent and multi-faceted tool which can be used to modify patient-reactions resulting from surgery and complex treatments, such as coronary care and renal dialysis. Obstetrics and dentistry excepted, its use to replace normal anaesthetic methods is nearly obsolete today. The hospital doctor who realizes the reciprocal effects of severe illness on his patient's psyche yet deprecates the routine use of tranquilizers, will find this book invaluable. Book in excellent condition; clean, lightly worn and unmarked. Dust jacket bears a variety of smallish tears at edges and has chips missing. Book
