From the note from the editors dated April 28 1870: "The appended letter was received after the May number of the Journal had gone to press.Dr. S. lies very ill possibly never to recover and the letter was written by dictation. The elder Meigs was the long-time Chair of Obstetrics at the Jefferson Medical College 1841-1861 a widely- published authority in his field and the first to diagnose embolism as a cause of sudden death in childbed 1849; however he is best remembered today for two significant failures: first his opposition to the use of anesthesia in childbirth hewing to the then-popular view that the pain and trauma of childbirth were the true source of the maternal bond; second refusal to endorse sanitary technique in delivery arguing that doctor's hands could not transmit post-partem uterine infections because "doctors are gentlemen and gentlemen's hands are clean" see Graham Eternal Eve: the History of Gynaecology and Obstetrics pp.397-400. This Memoir uncommon; only five physical locations noted in WorldCat no other copies noted in commerce. Lindsay & Blakiston unknown
