18399825Leipzig: F.A. Brockhaus 1839. First edition. Small folio 16x10.5" ix xv 2 96pp. Complete with 30 color lithographic plates with additional hand coloring of skin diseases. Stamps from the Royal Hungarian Franz Joseph University of Cluj and a Dr. Bata Karoly to prelims and final page. Contemporary signature of a Dr. Reinhardt to ffep. Upper marginal staining to first 30 or so pages not affecting plates nor text. Scattered faint foxing mainly to tissue guards which are intact. Binding soiled and worn with upper corner partially peeled away spine label also chipped. In all a very good copy in a practical contemporary binding.

Scarce and early dermatological atlas devoted entirely to non-syphilitic skin disease and illustrated with a full suite of colored lithographic plates. Friedrich Jacob Behrend 1803-1889 was a prominent Berlin physician who published several important works on sexually transmitted disease public hygiene and prostitution and skin disease. This his first published work was issued at a time when visual representation remained central to diagnosis with the text representing a growing effort to classify and distinguish these conditions.

A complete mid-19th-century dermatological atlas combining systematic text with visuals for practical medical use and in a contemporary functional binding perhaps institutionally used. 184442
Collection of two very rare italian medical treatises on Surgery and dermatology

No copy of both treatise recorded in WorldCat

Blandin Philippe Frédéric. Degli accidenti che possono sopraggiungere nelle operazioni chirurgiche e dei mezzi per rimediarvi / tesi di Federigo Blandin ; prima traduzione italiana con note del dott. Alessandro Foresi. Firenze : D. Passigli 1844.

8° 220 x 150 mm original brown paper boards blind tooled glit titles at spine pp. 280 1-errata

bound with

Lepelletier Almire. Trattato della erisipela e delle differenti varietà che può presentare . / di Alm. Lepelletier. Livorno : Bertani Antonelli e c. 1838.

8° 220 x 150 mm original brown paper boards blind-tooled gilt titles at spine 136-223.

Many illustrations along the text of first work

The first work consists of the first Italian edition translated and commented by the Tuscan doctor and art collector Alessandro Foresi of the treatise on accidents that can occur during surgical operations and on how to remedy them printed in first absolute edition in Paris with the title Des accidents qui peuvent survenir pendant les opeÌrations chirurgicales et des moyens d'y remeÌdier. Paris : Felix Locquin 1841.

The work is divided into two parts. The first part pp.1-138 is formed by the translation of Blandin's original work where it deals with the main accidents that can happen in an operating room grouping them into three main families:

1 Nervous accidents

2 Bleeding accidents

3 Spontaneous introduction of air into the veins

The second part pp139-289 is represented by the commentary accompanied by explanatory illustrations by the doctor Alessandro Foresti who is also responsible for the translation of the original work.

Foresti bases his comment on the theory that most of the accidents in the operating room are due to a lack of knowledge of human anatomy by most of the surgeons and reports several real cases in support of his thesis enriching the treatise with explanatory images.

The second work initially published as the 4th part of the Collezione di monografie memorie tesi ec. estratte dal repertorio medico-chirurgico-ostetrico che si pubblica a Bruxelles sotto la direzione di una società di medici / compilata e tradotta dal D. Niccola Orsini but often given the heterogeneity of the topics of the 4 treatises bound individually it is a dermatology treatise on Erispela by the French doctor and writer Lepelletier Almire.

Lepelletier summarized the main current opinions of his times on the disease its causes symptoms possible complications and the main methods proposed for its treatment.

Erysipelas from the Greek εÏυσίπελας - red skin is an acute skin infection involving the deep dermis and partly the hypodermis caused by pyogenic bacteria; the main culprit is group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus but sometimes staphylococcus aureus or other less common germs are involved.

CONDITION: Light foxing along the volumes due to the quality of the paper but a good copy of a fascinating collection of extremely rare medical treatise.
Passigli paperback
