Première édition de cet ouvrage, extrait des publications de l'Union Médicale de 1855. Ludger Lallemand (1820-62) était un médecin militaire français. Il divise son ouvrage en deux parties : les faits relatifs aux expériences dans lesquelles les animaux ont été soumis aux inhalations ménagées et successives de petites doses de chloroforme et les expériences dans lesquelles a eu lieu l'inhalation brusque et rapide d'une dose plus considérable du même agent anesthésique. Lallemand expose aussi le fonctionnement de l'anesthésimètre de M. Duroy, qui permet d'obtenir une dilution large et constante des vapeurs chloroformiques, assurant ainsi la sécurité de l'opération anesthésique. Il collabora avec lui et Maurice Perrin, en 1860, pour publier l'ouvrage intitulé "Du rôle de l'alcool et des anesthésiques dans l'organisme". Il s'agit de l'un des premiers livres sur le sujet. En effet, après les anesthésies de Pierre Flourens sur les animaux, le gynécologue écossais James Young Simpson n'utilise régulièrement l'anesthésie au chloroforme qu'à partir de 1847.
