Première édition de cet ouvrage, extrait des publications de l'Union Médicale de 1855. Ludger Lallemand (1820-62) était un médecin militaire français. Il divise son ouvrage en deux parties : les faits relatifs aux expériences dans lesquelles les animaux ont été soumis aux inhalations ménagées et successives de petites doses de chloroforme et les expériences dans lesquelles a eu lieu l'inhalation brusque et rapide d'une dose plus considérable du même agent anesthésique. Lallemand expose aussi le fonctionnement de l'anesthésimètre de M. Duroy, qui permet d'obtenir une dilution large et constante des vapeurs chloroformiques, assurant ainsi la sécurité de l'opération anesthésique. Il collabora avec lui et Maurice Perrin, en 1860, pour publier l'ouvrage intitulé "Du rôle de l'alcool et des anesthésiques dans l'organisme". Il s'agit de l'un des premiers livres sur le sujet. En effet, après les anesthésies de Pierre Flourens sur les animaux, le gynécologue écossais James Young Simpson n'utilise régulièrement l'anesthésie au chloroforme qu'à partir de 1847. 8vo., [First US Edition?], free endpapers lightly spotted, some mild age-staining to text; mid-nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, back with four raised bands ruled and tooled in gilt, second compartment lettered in gilt, red sprinkled edges, boards lightly age-marked else a very good, crisp, firm copy. Liston's classic text was first published in three parts (1831-32), here combined in a single volume. It is his first published work, later augmented by 'Practical Surgery' (1837). 'In his day [Robert] Liston was the most dexterous [sic] and resourceful surgeon in the British Isles. He was the first in the country to remove the scapula and the first - on 21 December 1846 - to perform a major operation with the aid of an anaesthetic' (Garrison & Morton 4777). A remarkably well-preserved copy of an important and influential treatise.
