Liston's classic text was first published in three parts (1831-32), here combined in a single volume. It is his first published work, later augmented by 'Practical Surgery' (1837). 'In his day [Robert] Liston was the most dexterous [sic] and resourceful surgeon in the British Isles. He was the first in the country to remove the scapula and the first - on 21 December 1846 - to perform a major operation with the aid of an anaesthetic' (Garrison & Morton 4777).
