Printed on cream-colored textured stock creating a soft focus effect with the image measuring 7 1/8 x 9 1/8 inches. Very good condition. Verso blank. A copy of this image is held by the Smithsonian which describes it thus: "Young Man with Scarification in Costume and with Ornaments Playing Panpipes 1943 Malaita." Merl LaVoy 1886-1953 is well known for his photographs of indigenous life in the Solomon Islands the Philippines China and Alaska as well as for films he made for the American Red Cross following World War I. unknown books

Fish published by Soule and with the printed title and copyright data also printed below the image on the mount card; image has been tinted and also has had some additional painting added to the girls lacy trim and her colorful hair ornament; John P. Soule was a famous stereo-photographer from Washington Street Boston MA closely associated with the prolific Kilburn Brothers of photographic stereoview fame; image approx. 3 1/4" x 5 1/4" size; the mount card adds about an inch surrounding and the later framing adds about 1 3/4" border; some old discoloration noted on the mount card and a little in the image not very intrusive to the view; framed in a new wood surround and with glass; light wear; very good condition; interesting American photographic history ephemeral item. 1890536821890. Photograph 7 x 4 1/2 inches affixed to larger mount picturing in the foreground an obelisk on which are engraved the names of the victims a grove of trees to the rear. The monument actually memorialized those killed at the 19 May 1858 "Marais des Cygnes Massacre" the "last significant act of violence" in the "Bleeding Kansas" conflict; on that day a group of marauders from Missouri kidnapped 11 unarmed free-staters and killed five of them an act widely condemned in the national press and used by John G. Whittier as the subject of a poem. Mount browned and chipped image quite faded in the lower left corner small chip in the left edge. Still a good example. <br/><br/> unknown books

No photographer place or date is noted and this is the photo used at the wiki site and listed in the U.S. Navy archives as from 1939 when the ship was undergoing sea trials. The Anderson saw extensive service in World War II for which she was awarded ten battle stars. Laid down to cardstock overall size 19 1/2" x 23" approx. A few small spots dirt shallow divots in the image a few dots of paste from old matte-mounting and some old silvering of the gelatin print at bottom margin visible in raking light.
