Após uma juventude discreta vivida numa família de classe média convencional Robert tinha quinze anos quando aprendeu gravura e litografia na Escola Estienne em Paris e começou a desenhar rótulos para embalagens de medicamentos. Em 1931 tornou-se assistente de câmara no estúdio de André Vigneau onde descobriu saídas artísticas que o impulsionariam. Os quatro anos que passou no departamento de publicidade da Renault de onde foi despedido por atrasos frequentes levaram-no à atractiva posição de fotógrafo independente.<br /><br />A eclosão da Segunda Guerra Mundial interrompeu os seus projectos. Mais tarde na euforia do pós-guerra parisiense apesar de aceitar encomendas para sobreviver acumulava fotos que viriam a obter grande reconhecimento explorando obstinadamente lugares «onde não havia nada para ver» focando-se em momentos fugazes e pequenos prazeres iluminados pelo reflexo dos raios de sol no asfalto da cidade.<br /><br />Quando faleceu em Abril de 1994 deixou cerca de 450.000 negativos que narram com um olhar terno e observador a história do seu tempo sem esconder a profundidade do seu pensamento a sua atitude irreverente perante o poder e a autoridade e a sua mente incansavelmente livre.</p> M-17-C-30 hardcover
