The Massachusetts Gazetteer of 1890 said of the town: "Merrimac is a thrifty and attractive manufacturing town situated on the north bank of the Merrimack River. The principle business is carriage making in the different departments of which in numerous shops some 500 men are engaged."<br/>The mid 1800s marked the peak of Merrimac's carriage-making and by 1888 there were nineteen carriage-making shops as well as other companies related to the carriage-making industry. Between 1881 and 1889 Merrimac's carriage factories were making 1500 quality carriages per year. Companies such as J.B. Judkins and Company Loud Brothers and H.G. & H.W. A straightforward account of the qualities of 21 kinds of fish including flounder eel perch salmon pike trout and others less well known bleak guinead and brief instructions as to how to catch them; the sixpenny pamphlet ends with a three-page discussion of various worms and how to obtain them. Westwood and Satchell list this work similiar to that of Thomas Best's A Concise Treatise on the Art of Angling London 1787 without authorial attribution. The words "but Comprehensive" in the title suggest that this was intended as a sequel to Best a popular work which went into numerous editions. <br/>The words "embellished with a frontispiece" have been effaced from the title page suggesting that for a long time this copy has been lacking the plate as also in the copy retained at Yale. Bell's Life in London was a rival to Pierce Egan's Life in London and Sporting Guide an offshoot of his highly successful book. Egan began his periodical in 1824 as a Sunday weekly and in 1826 asked Cruikshank to design some wood engravings to head the paper's regular features which increased its circulation. Some Cruikshank designs were subsequently used without the artist's consent by Bell's paper and in 1827 Egan unable to achieve the success of his competitor sold out to Bell who merged the two journals into one. Bell's was a conspicuous success: it sold as many as sixteen thousand copies weekly to the poorest classes. This advertisement in addition to its lively cover of over twenty woodcuts features a number of poetical effusions to Royalty the Nobility Members of Parliament the Clergy the Army and Navy the Commercial Agricultural and Theatrical Worlds and of course Sportsmen of Every Degree The advertisement is not a part of Bell's periodical but was a separately issued publication to promote circulation. Outstanding group of photographs documenting bird hunting in the Twin Lakes area of north central North Dakota northeast of Bismarck in the late nineteenth century. Scenes include several of the hunters and their arrayed bag of geese ducks grouse and snipe; turf houses and barns; a wooden farmhouse on the prairie; the hunters' tent camp and wagons; and the narrow stretch of ground between the Twin Lakes. One of the most interesting views shows two hunters standing in dugout pits in the stubble of a harvested field with a long line of decoys behind them; this photograph is the only one to identify the hunters by name Cummings on the left and Dr. Booth on the right; a second uncaptioned photograph shows the two men from a different angle with one of the dogs. The "Lunch" photograph shows a circle of four men and their dog seated in the high grass eating one hunter taking a pull at a small dark bottle beside their wagon and tethered horses.<br/><br/>Other captions note: "1 afternoon bag 3 men 88 geese 4 varieties"; "Our dogs 4 pointers 1 setter"; "Duck slue in No. Dakota"; "Mixed bag ducks geese snipe plover"; four hunters and their dog with their bag of "Sharp tail grouse ducks and snipe"; "Rex on point"; the wagon carrying the party of six titled "grouse hunting"; and other untitled photographs of the same group of men. Several of the wide view photographs are reminiscent of the sporting illustrations of A.B.
