Hand colored aquatint signed in the plate Stainforth. <br/><br/>A choice group of the sporting prints commissioned by William Woodward owner of the Belair Stables.<br/>"Brown Betty" by T.P. Earl 1874-1947 is previously unrecorded and never seen by Ordeman whose 2005 book collected prior knowledge on the prints. One other print by British artist T.P. Earl Flares is noted by Ordeman date unknown but in personal communication he reports that his information comes at second hand. and has never seen "Brown Betty". The print is however in the collection of the Belair Mansion Museum established after Woodward's death at his Maryland residence. Brown Betty won the 1933 1000 Guineas race and the painting by T.P. Earl that Woodward commissioned is dated 1933 in the plate. The paper and production of this color print differ from the aquatint horse portraits commissioned from Connett and Frank Lowe. Given the date of the portrait we conjecture that Woodward commissioned the print in London and thus it may predate and be the point of origin for the series of prints commissioned from Connett. In recent conversation Ordeman advanced a similar hypothesis.<br/>The Megargee print "Marguerite" with her colt Gallant Fox is from the collection of Derrydale Press publisher Eugene V. Connett 3rd.<br/>Rare and important. Ordeman 2005 pp. 96-98; Mitchell British Equestrian Artists: "Stainforth's detail and accuracy in likeness were very fine and very natural. He avoided the pitfalls of flatness and photographic stiffness so often found in this type of work." A brief but detailed section of reminiscences is followed by early photographs of sport along the Beaverkill before World War I including author Geo. M. L. La Branche in mid-cast. Each photograph is titled in a fine hand which Bruns speculates is that of "Lady B." pictured on p. 19. There are also photographs of trout fishing in Maine and other points in New York State and of the author and his friend Charlie Campbell president of the club 1910-1923 fishing for Atlantic salmon in Newfoundland. Campbell was the friend who first brought Bradley to the Voorhees homestead in 1908 and with Bradley formed the Beaverkill Trout Club. Campbell's motto was "It's better just a little farther on". These recollections were evidently composed in 1927 for a speech to fellow members to judge from the text and expanded for publication here.<br/><br/>"A very rare work numbering about 25 copies" Heller. And at the beginning of the best Swordfish time in the Pacific to leave for the doubtful pursuit of giant Tuna off the Atlantic was something extremely hard to do." This is a stirring account and the anglers endure rugged conditions rough seas and lost fish. Zane Grey catches a 684-pound tuna; the last portion of the chapter not present includes his account of catching a record 758-pound bluefin tuna off Nova Scotia.<br/><br/>A classic Zane Grey fishing tale. unknown books

Legendary Rarity With Signed Card To Solomon Sturges. A beautifullly produced volume the account of a weeklong canoe trip fishing for salmon with guide Harry Allen privately printed for Lee Sturges 1865-1954 a well known Chicago artist and industrialist. The book was designed and printed by Ralph Fletcher Seymour notable in the Chicago Arts and Crafts movement.<br/><br/>Bruns recounts a story told by the author's son that his father's house burned down and with it most of the edition. Bruns suggests that "four or five copies" survived; the actual number to have survived is perhaps a dozen copies. This copy with a small exterior paper repair at the head of the spine and a superficial stain at the center of the spine internally a very fresh copy. Unquestionably rare. Illustrated with 28 photographs on 14 plates and 5 hand-colored plates after old prints and a photograph; with folding map tipped in on rear pastedown. 1 vols. 8vo. Original dark blue grained leatherette title gilt on upper cover. A fine fresh copy. First edition one of only 30 copies this copy numbered in ink "Seven". Illustrated with 28 photographs on 14 plates and 5 hand-colored plates after old prints and a photograph; with folding map tipped in on rear pastedown. 1 vols. 8vo. In his Foreword the author states: "These sketches were written for the members of the Moisie Salmon Club. The sole purpose was to give information to them of the waters and conditions of the Moisie River and its branches above the places customarily fished by them.". The Moisie is one of a network of navigable rivers running about 110 miles northward from the St. Lawrence in eastern Quebec; old and well worn portage paths testify to the antiquity of the route along which for hundreds of years Indians have hunted and fished. For salmon and sea trout it is one of the richest areas known. It is not surprising that the Moisie Salmon Club was founded to reap the benefits of this bounty; what is surprising is that so much care attention and expense has been lavished on a book limited to only 30 copies. The text consists primarily of the author's descriptions of areas north of the more usual fishing sites based on his explorations as a sportsman with guides. In addition to five colored plates which tend to establish the romantic mood of the region there are 28 superb reproductions of sepia photographs printed on special photographic-type paper to convey both the look and the actual feel of the originals. The book's 78 pages conclude with an Index and inside the back cover is mounted a folding map of the area described.<br /> <br /> The book is rare not in Wetzel or Heller not seen by Bruns and the only copy we know of to appear at auction - a worn copy - brought $1870 at the Netz sale in New York in 1986.<br /> <br /> This copy bears the ownership signature of E.H. Rawls on the front flyleaf: pages 12 to 19 comprise Edward H. Rawls' own account of his 1929 trip to the East Branch Chute and Cran Serré of the Moisie River where he was the first to take salmon on a light rod above the falls in defiance of "the old story retold until believed by everyone that salmon would rise ot the fly above the rapids". Palmer notes that Rawls' exploits prompted the club to build the Webster trail and develop the upper river.<br /> <br /> A choice association copy. Well written and nicely illustrated privately printed account of an Alaska hunting expedition. The party of four organized by H. Wendell Endicott comprised Endicott George Perry Latham Reed and Harold C. Keith whose diary for 14 August to 7 October 1930 is printed here. Latham Reed Sr. and Gen. R. E. Wood joined the party for the first stage of the journey to Big Delta. <br/>The hunting began on 24 August when a herd of caribou passed across the road in front of their car. Mr. Collins assistant district attorney at Fairbanks" stepped out and showed us how to shoot by dropping a big caribou on the first shot."<br/><br/>Twenty-one miles up the road from Big Delta the party left Mr. Collins' car and joined their crew of 8 and 24 horses and began their trip. They hunted bear and moose and caribou and sheep near the Gerstle River and Elting Creek and Jarvis encountered heavy snow saw the northern lights and completed a large loop back to Twenty-Six Mile Cabin during their stay.<br/><br/>Endicott 1880-1954 was author of Adventures with Rod and Harpoon in the Florida Keys. Harold C. Keith Amherst class of 1908 and Endicott were both shoe manufacturers in Massachusetts. Keith was president of the George E. Keith Co. in Brockton<br/><br/>The only other copy of this book recorded is a photocopy in the Candace Waugaman Collection at the Rasmuson Library University of Alaska Fairbanks<br/><br/>RARE. Comprising:<br/><br/>1 "Home Waters" Drypoint etching first proof impression of a scene of nine ducks in flight used as the frontispiece to the large-format Derrydale retrospective of Roland Clark's Etchings with the title "The Morning Flight". The published etching includes Clark's monogram in lower left added subsequent to this proof. Ordeman does not note a proof impression in his discussion of the published book. This print is signed and inscribed by the artist "First Proof - to Gene Connett June 10 1938"; in the foreword to the book Connett writes "My friend Roland Clark has asked me to write a short foreword to this book of his etchings and as I obviously admire his work it is a great pleasure for me to accede to his request. . That his art has received widespread recognition in this country is common knowledge; but it is not so well known that a large number of his etchings have been sold abroad where the quality of his work is highly appreciated." The foreword is dated June 14 1938. In his Foreword the author states: "These sketches were written for the members of the Moisie Salmon Club. The sole purpose was to give information to them of the waters and conditions of the Moisie River and its branches above the places customarily fished by them.". The Moisie is one of a network of navigable rivers running about 110 miles northward from the St. Lawrence in eastern Quebec; old and well worn portage paths testify to the antiquity of the route along which for hundreds of years Indians have hunted and fished. For salmon and sea trout it is one of the richest areas known. It is not surprising that the Moisie Salmon Club was founded to reap the benefits of this bounty; what is surprising is that so much care attention and expense has been lavished on a book limited to only 30 copies. The text consists primarily of the author's descriptions of areas north of the more usual fishing sites based on his explorations as a sportsman with guides. In addition to five colored plates which tend to establish the romantic mood of the region there are 28 superb reproductions of sepia photographs printed on special photographic-type paper to convey both the look and the actual feel of the originals. The book's 78 pages conclude with an Index and inside the back cover is mounted a folding map of the area described.<br/><br/>The book is rare not in Wetzel or Heller not seen by Bruns and the only copy we know of to appear at auction - a worn copy - brought $1870 at the Netz sale in New York in 1986.<br/><br/>This copy bears the ownership signature of E.H. Rawls on the front flyleaf: pages 12 to 19 comprise Edward H. Rawls' own account of his 1929 trip to the East Branch Chute and Cran Serré of the Moisie River where he was the first to take salmon on a light rod above the falls in defiance of "the old story retold until believed by everyone that salmon would rise ot the fly above the rapids". Palmer notes that Rawls' exploits prompted the club to build the Webster trail and develop the upper river.<br/><br/>A choice association copy.
