Boyer's watercolors done in larger size were reduced to edition dimensions of approximately 10 x 8 inches. The proof prints before letters have been reworked by Boyer who has signed each one and show a depth and richness of modelling that the published edition for all its beauty does not. This set was one of the finest productions of The Derrydale Press Sporting Print Series. We believe the set of proofs to be unique and the original paintings are of course unquestionably so. Bradley was Secretary-Treasurer of the Beaverkill Trout Club from 1910-1929; the club had 43 members at the time of his writing. A brief but detailed section of reminiscences is followed by early photographs of sport along the Beaverkill before World War I including author Geo. M. L. La Branche in mid-cast. Each photograph is titled in a fine hand which Bruns speculates is that of "Lady B." pictured on p. 19. There are also photographs of trout fishing in Maine and other points in New York State and of the author and his friend Charlie Campbell president of the club 1910-1923 fishing for Atlantic salmon in Newfoundland. Campbell was the friend who first brought Bradley to the Voorhees homestead in 1908 and with Bradley formed the Beaverkill Trout Club. Campbell's motto was "It's better just a little farther on". These recollections were evidently composed in 1927 for a speech to fellow members to judge from the text and expanded for publication here.<br /> <br /> "A very rare work numbering about 25 copies" Heller. Illustrated with 28 photographs on 14 plates and 5 hand-colored plates after old prints and a photograph; with folding map tipped in on rear pastedown. 1 vols. 8vo. Original dark blue grained leatherette title gilt on upper cover. A fine fresh copy. First edition one of only 30 copies this copy numbered in ink "Seven". Illustrated with 28 photographs on 14 plates and 5 hand-colored plates after old prints and a photograph; with folding map tipped in on rear pastedown. 1 vols. 8vo. In his Foreword the author states: "These sketches were written for the members of the Moisie Salmon Club. The sole purpose was to give information to them of the waters and conditions of the Moisie River and its branches above the places customarily fished by them.". The Moisie is one of a network of navigable rivers running about 110 miles northward from the St. Lawrence in eastern Quebec; old and well worn portage paths testify to the antiquity of the route along which for hundreds of years Indians have hunted and fished. For salmon and sea trout it is one of the richest areas known. It is not surprising that the Moisie Salmon Club was founded to reap the benefits of this bounty; what is surprising is that so much care attention and expense has been lavished on a book limited to only 30 copies. The text consists primarily of the author's descriptions of areas north of the more usual fishing sites based on his explorations as a sportsman with guides. In addition to five colored plates which tend to establish the romantic mood of the region there are 28 superb reproductions of sepia photographs printed on special photographic-type paper to convey both the look and the actual feel of the originals. The book's 78 pages conclude with an Index and inside the back cover is mounted a folding map of the area described.<br /> <br /> The book is rare not in Wetzel or Heller not seen by Bruns and the only copy we know of to appear at auction - a worn copy - brought $1870 at the Netz sale in New York in 1986.<br /> <br /> This copy bears the ownership signature of E.H. Rawls on the front flyleaf: pages 12 to 19 comprise Edward H. Rawls' own account of his 1929 trip to the East Branch Chute and Cran Serré of the Moisie River where he was the first to take salmon on a light rod above the falls in defiance of "the old story retold until believed by everyone that salmon would rise ot the fly above the rapids". Palmer notes that Rawls' exploits prompted the club to build the Webster trail and develop the upper river.<br /> <br /> A choice association copy. The regular trade edition was published at the same time by Windward House a sporting press started by Connett in 1933. Both editions used Barber's vignette on the the title page. From this drawing it appears that Connett liked the artist's Windward design and used in it the Derrydale edition: in the margin of the drawing Connett has pencilled "reduce 1/4 inch" and the drawing was photographically reduced to the smaller dimension for the large paper copies. A simplified version of the design was used on the Derrydale edition spine. One of the rarest and most desirable productions of the Derrydale Press and by virtue of the drawing a unique copy. The camp had been built by the Phipps family in 1921 the first fishing camp on the river with indoor plumbing and was bought by the Engelhards in mid century; the building burned down in the 1980s. Charles Engelhard was the model for Ian Fleming's villain Goldfinger.<br /> Major General Sir Francis de Guingand 1900-1979 served with Montgomery from El Alamein to the surrender of the Wehrmacht in the West. As Montgomery's chief of staff he had responsibility for the smooth functioning of the British Army and exercised his considerable diplomatic skills in liaison with their American Allies. "It has been said that in Ireland the inevitable never happens and the impossible invariably occurs."<br /> Edith Œnone Somerville 1858-1949 with her cousin Violet Martin 1862-1915 embarked on a notable women's literary collaboration and wrote under the name of Somerville & Ross. Their series of admirable tales of Irish life some humorous some tragic captures the flavor of rural life and everywhere demonstrates their sensitivity to distinctively Irish turns of phrase. Among their best-loved stories are the three books narrating incidents in the life of Major Sinclair Yeates Resident Magistrate at Skebawn. Published between 1899 and 1915 the Irish R.M. stories are filled with humor sport and deftly observed colorful character sketches. Somerville's cousin died suddenly in 1915; Somerville participated in a number of seances with medium Jem Barlow in 1916 and by the end of 1916 Somerville had resumed writing. She thereafter maintained that she was in constant communication with Violet's spirit. Somerville was also an accomplished illustrator and in the late 1920s Eugene V. Connett 3d proprietor of the Derrydale Press persuaded her to produce these illustrations from the Irish R.M. books. The limitation states 50 sets but perhaps only 30 sets were in fact colored and signed.<br /> Plate I: A CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE. "Music even was not wanting to our progress and old Flynn bleating shrilly upon his horn to the hounds below became idyllic." 1998007208Amsterdam: Anthos. Signed first edition of rare English language Dutch edition of Irving's novel. The true first edition of Irving's novel preceding the release of the US and UK editions. Author's SIGNED presentation to motorcycle legend Cook Neilson who took the photo of Irving that was used for the dust jacket of the book: "For Stepp and Cook - with my appreciation and affection - John Irving April 1 1998." Together with AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Irving on his stationery to Neilson laid in in which Irving says that Neilson's photos will also be used on the UK edition and jokes that another photo to be used for the American and Canadian editions is more flattering because it doesn't show Irving's face. Closes with mention of a nearby school in Vermont. Neilson was a preeminent motorcycle journalist and editor of Cycle Magazine. As a motrocyclist Neilson won the Daytona Superbike race in 1977 on a Ducati. He was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame and the Ducati North America Hall of Fame in 2006. The portraits include Stubbs' 'Godolphin Arabian' and a vast stable of paintings by Herring Senior racing scenes and other works.<br /> "The twenty-one copy edition of Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses is one of the rarest works of its kind in America. . It was Connett's most amibitious project and if produced today would easily cost several thousand dollars per copy" Siegel p. 174.<br /> <br /> Unique survival of the production process for one of the great American sporting books of the interwar years and a testament to Woodward's close involvement with the book.
