First edition of this manual one of the earliest of its kind. It has been attributed to one George Smith and contains the first appearance of the charming "Angler's Song" cf. Gingrich Fishing in Print p. 97 as well as recipes strategies for each species fly-tying etc. It quickly became a standard handbook of the eighteenth century was reprinted with additions in 1736 through 1786 then again in several forms under various titles as late as 1828 in London under the title The Angler's Guide . Cover cloth modestly foxed with tanning to spine panel. Both boards slightly bowed. Corners rubbed with slight exposure a bit more pronounced to bottom rear corner. Upper front flyleaf shows period inked signature of Nat Schmulowitz a San Francisco attorney civic leader humanitarian and bibliophile who graduated from Berkeley in 1910 beneath his signature is penned "U.C. 1910". Schmulowitz is perhaps best remembered as one of a team of lawyers who successfully defended Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle on charges of manslaughter in three separate trials in 1921-22; his humor collection established in 1947 and encompassing more than 23000 volumes resides at the San Francisco Public Library. This volume was issued in Nov. 1900 apparently just days prior to the infamous "Glasshouse disaster" that occurred at the 10th annual game on 29 Nov. of that year the greatest loss of spectator life in the history of American sports. A decently preserved copy showing wear commensurate with age but no major faults. Exceptionally scarce. Commercial Publishing Co. Hardcover

First edition of this important early mathematical approach to poker; along with Blackbridge's The Complete Poker Player 1875 it is the earliest book devoted soley to the game. The author Henry T. Winterblossom advertises himself as a Professor of Mathematics and his book is the first to treat the mathematical aspects of poker. Winterblossom argues that knowing the odds and probabilites of success with each hand mitigates the risk inherent in gambling and reduces the player's reliance on dumb luck: "All games of chance create a morbid appetite in those who indulge in them in proportion to their ignorance of the mathematical basis upon which those games are constructed." <br /> <br /> "The National Game" a New York Times article for February 12 1875 suggests that Winterblossom is a pseudonym and though the author's real name is not revealed he was thought to be a member of New York's literary Lotus Club.<br /> <br /> The earliest contemporary notice of Blackbridge's Complete Poker Player considered with Winterblossom the first books on the sport was a review in the 10 April 1875 edition of the New York Times - evidence perhaps that Winterblossom's work has precedence as the first book on poker.
