Each album is housed in a new grey cloth protective slipcase with chemise and crimson morocco spine label. the images mostly 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches and inset to the album two per page. 2 vols. 8vo each photo approximately 6 1/2 x 10 inches. Hunting and Fishing in Westchester 1900. Refuting the rule that the family photo album is invariably an icon of transcendent uninterest this collection of amateur photographs is a thoroughly beguiling one. The prints mostly in sepia record the happy idle moments of a prosperous family who lived or vacationed in the Bedford-Croton area of New York's Westchester County. Scenes include "On road to Bedford Station" hunting scenes on the "Croton River at Croton Falls" "Kisco River" and "Bronx River" etc. Subjects include some excellent shots of the wild surrounding countryside wildlife family members doing interesting things hunters or anglers displaying their trophies some posed "gag" shots and a host of other scenes. Agreeably the photos are not pasted down but slid into card mounts enabling them to be removed or rearranged. To turn the pages of these albums is to immerse onself in the scenes and pleasures of an easy less complicated day: a nostalgic and tranquilizing piece of delightful Americana. unknown books

1880178721880. 2 Albumen photos of early recreational tennis game. Circa 1880's. Larger photo measures 6.75" x 8.5" inches on original photographer's board measuring 9.75" x 6.75". Smaller photo measures 7.25" x 4.5" inches on white photographer's board measuring 8" x 5" inches. Photo was taken by Marston photo studio of Bangor Maine. Larger photo shows a large group of young women posed in tiers on a lawn in front of a large brick building. The front row is spread across the grass with others in chairs behind them and the back row sitting on the open windowsill and ledge along the side of the building. The group is entirely female suggesting maybe an early women's college all of them dressed in high-collared dresses long skirts with bustles many in hats and some with parasols. In the front row four women hold tennis rackets as if posing before or after a game. This restless group of young women are pictured in the 1870s or 1880's. The other photo shows a tennis game at play with a man on one side of the net and two women on the other holding rackets on a tennis lawn. The court has been constructed on a lawn with painted boundaries and a net which was customary in 19th century. In the background is a large white wooden house. Lawn tennis came into fashion in the 1870's as an upper-class hobby marking leisure time for players and spectators. Some spotting and Light staining on photos does not effect clarity of images. Overall in very good condition. unknown

An outstanding record of outdoor life and sport in southern Louisiana being Pringle's account of his shooting near the Teche and Attakapas country. "I shot almost altogether on the Camperdown and Cypre-Mort grounds; both very extensive inland marshes with low prairies and sloughs adjacent."<br/><br/>Pringle was the son of the distinguished South Carolina politician John Julius Pringle and here he recounts in elaborate detail and with marvelous photographs his hunting experiences over twenty years from 1867 in the bayous of Louisiana. It is also an account of the ecological consequences of the conversion of marshlands to agricultural purposes: with draining of the swamps and the extension of the New Orleans and Opelousas Railway now the Southern Pacific to Franklin the snipe came no more. Pringle also calls attention to the destruction of northern nesting grounds and the effect upon snipe populations.<br/><br/>"The most valuable record of game we have. Completely accurate with tallies of game killed each day and natural history notes" -- Phillips.<br/>"Pringle's careful record stands unique on our shores . Twenty Years Snipe Shooting offers an unique insight into an era of southern history and near forgotten lifestyle." -- Mathewson. <br/>"A very rare book; only a small number were privately printed" Gee.<br/><br/>This copy is inscribed by Pringle to Mrs. Haig Thomas. Original Wraps. 12mo. 94, [7] pages. 17 cm. Only edition. With 7 leaves of plates: depicting the Young Women's Hebrew Association building, facilities, and courses. Detailed twelfth annual report of the YWHA. As a communal agency run entirely by and for women, the YWHA provided an important political arena for Jewish women in the early part of the twentieth century. As a pioneering Jewish institution combining social and religious services, the YWHA became one of the principal sources of the Jewish community center movement. In the new building of 1914, the auditorium doubled as the synagogue, and services were conducted every Friday night, Saturday morning, and on Jewish holidays. The other major Jewish aspect of the YWHA was its curriculum consisting of classes in Hebrew, Bible study, and Jewish history. This was coordinated with an experimental Hebrew school for girls conducted at the YWHA by the Bureau of Jewish Education (of the New York City Kehilla) . Of course, the YWHA offered far more than religious services and Hebrew classes. In 1917, a few years after the completion of its new eight-story facility on 110th Street overlooking Central Park, the New York YWHA was described as 'the only large institution of its kind in America. ' The description of the modern social center continued: 'Besides being a most comfortable home for one hundred and seventy girls, the building is also a true center for the communal interests of the neighborhood; it houses a Commercial School, a Hebrew School, Trade Classes in Dressmaking, Millinery, Domestic Science, classes in Hebrew, Bible Study, Jewish History, Art, English to Foreigners, Advanced English, French, Spanish, and Nursing. There is a completely equipped modern gymnasium and swimming pool. - Jewish Women's Archive. Subjects: Jews - New York (State) - New York. Young Women's Hebrew Association (New York, N.
