Comprised mostly of landscapes taken in the northeastern United States Woods Hole and Nobska Massachusetts; Providence Rhode Island; Hunts Mills New Jersey; and more also features images of people picnicking playing tennis and sailing. Julian Marshall was tennis correspondent to The Field and some chapters in his book first appeared in the magazine in 1876 and 1877. The Annals of Tennis was both a history and a handbook and according to Patrick Scott Curator of the William D. Haggard III Tennis Collection "intact copies are rare as the book was frequently kept in the dedans of tennis courts for reference." The beautiful Eastlake style binding is decorated with a centerpiece of crossed rackets over tennis balls surrounded by a geometric design in gilt and black. She won 31 Grand Slam titles during her career 2 Olympic gold medals and was the Wimbledon champion a record-setting 8 times record unbroken until 1990. In 1933 forty years before the "Battle of the Sexes" match in which Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in an exhibition game Helen Wills defeated Phil Neer then the #8 nationally ranked male tennis player in the US. This issue of Time featuring Wills across the cover was the same year as the "Match of the Century" wherein Wills then ranked #2 in the world faced Suzanne Lengdon the #1 ranked French star.
