Le prince Ghika et son père attirés par les exploits cynégétiques accomplis à la fin du 19ème siècle dans le Somaliland par les chasseurs européens, decidèrent les deux hommes à y tenter la fortune du fusil. Il en résulte ce livre, composer avec les souvenirs et les notes de chaque soir, griffonnées après une émouvante poursuite ou à la fin d’une étape. Boyle wrote several books on orchids, of which this is his scarcest and most attractive, especially the colored plates. The stories of how the orchids were found are quite interesting. Most chapters include lists and descriptions of numerous orchid species and hybrids. Massachusetts Horticultural Society Catalogue 35. The plates include Zygo-Colax, Laelias, Cattleyas, Lycaste, Cypripediums, Odontoglossums.

A Very Good plus copy in green cloth with brilliant gilt stamping to the front cover and spine in a poor dust jacket lacking several large from the corners and the spine. But copies of this title are rare with a dust jacket of any sort. Charles Frederick Holder 1851-1915 a founder of Pasadena's Tournament of Roses came from a wealthy Massachusetts Quaker family. After working as a curator at New York's American Museum of Natural History Holder moved to Pasadena in 1885. A passionate naturalist throughout his life he became known in Pasadena as a businessman philanthropist and conservationist/sportsman. Life in the open 1906 is Holder's account of hunting and fishing in the counties of Santa Barbara San Buenaventura Los Angeles San Bernardino Riverside Orange and San Diego. The topics include horseback hunts for lynx fox and wolves; fishing for trout in the Sierra Madres and for game fish off Catalina; pursuit of shore birds and water fowl; mountain lions and mountain goats; and photographic hunts for sea lions. Caption on photograph very faint and difficult to read. Almost near fine. Self-trained artist William Henry Jackson 1843-1942 chose as his subject the opening of the American West. In 1868 Jackson was commissioned by the Union Pacific Railroad Company to produce photographs documenting the scenery along their railroad lines. As a result Ferdinand Hayden took notice of his work and asked him to document an expedition through the Yellowstone River. Throughout the 1870s Jackson worked on a number of federal expeditions with Hayden. In 1878 Jackson opened a photography studio in Denver Colorado. He later changed the name of his business to W.H.
