8327New York: Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute. First Edition. Original wraps. Very Good. 5X7 Inches.20 PP. Archive of EIGHT "Shooting's Fun For Everyone" booklets including the original 1957 first issue. While it may seem unfamiliar to us today the America of the 1950's included gun-wielding children in every state. Children were introduced to guns and gun ownership at a very early age. Most schools including those in New York City had pistol and rifle shooting competitions and clubs in the 1950's. Up until 1969 most New York City High Schools had a shooting club; students competed in shooting competitions and the federal government paid for rifles and ammunition. The New York City schools quietly phased out their shooting programs during the 1970s. These early comic-style brochures were marketed for sale to gun retailers as well as manufacturing companies. They were distributed as part of a national decades long campaign to entice children to gun ownership.

The first year production run of this booklet contained no blank box on the rear cover for advertisement. This was altered in coming years and many of these booklets located today are from local government offices and gun retailers as well as manufacturers.

This archive contains:

1957 VG example of this first year booklet
1958 VG / blank back
1958 VG / Winchester & Western Rifle advertisement
1958 VG / Deputy Game Protector - Tamaqua PA
1959 VG / blank back
1962 GOOD / blank back
1966 VG / blank back
1967 VG / blank back. 25015'Royal Mint Melbourne Australia / 21 May 1875'. Barton who was born in London joined the Royal Mint’s Melbourne branch as one of two assayers on its opening in 1869; in 1887 he was promoted to Superintendent and in 1895 to Deputy Master holding that position until his reitrement in 1904. See his entry in the Encyclopaedia of Australian Science and Innovation. In case Barton has misspelled the name the recipient may be William Dawson Grubb 1817-1879 or his son Frederick William Grubb 1844-1923 who have a joint-entry in the Australian Dictionary of National Biography. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. Signed ‘Robert Barton’. In very good condition lightly aged and folded twice for postage. Begins: ‘Dear Grubbe / I met the writer of the enclosed letter not present after you left & he told me that between us we could not have advised you to go to a worse place for the sport you want than Echuca I feel therefore that I have been instrumental although far from my intention in leading you a wild duck chase.’ He has been informed by ‘Singleton’ that ‘there are very few Kangaroo if any near Echuca & the duck are impossible to get near’. He suggests that Grubbe takes the steamer to Albury and proceeds as Singleton directs ‘& you are in a country abounding with Kangaroo & splendid duck shooting’. Barton is enclosing a note from his friend ‘to his brother who is managing the “Walla Walla†station’ and whom Grubbe will find ‘a very decent fellow. He is a batchelor sic I believe living in a large house. Ask at Albury if you are anywhere near Tumbarumba Caves because if so they are one of the finest sights of the Colonies.’ Barton wishes he had known this information before Grubbe left ‘as then you might have gone to Albury via the new line but if you elect to go from Echuca you will at all events see the river Murray’. 'Royal Mint [Melbourne, Australia] / 21 May 1875'. unknown
176712978N.p. Colonial America 1767. 1 vols. 8-1/4 x 6-1/2 inches. Some stains old folds some cracking but all present and attractive overall. 1 vols. 8-1/4 x 6-1/2 inches. An intriguing document written in various hands on fine laid paper on which appears to be a French watermark of an elaborate cartouche over the words "V. Guerevin". It is titled "Advertisement" and reads: "This is to Give notes to all Persons that we the subscribers do forworn all Persons from hunting with Gun or Dogs on our Lands / August ye 6th 1767" Below this are the signatures of 15 individuals four of whom unable to sign have made their mark on the document under their name. Among the legible names are those of Laurence Riley William Abbott Lener Thomas Dutten Richard Von Cade James Reed Edward Stevenson John Jouller John Abbott Dennis Morris Jacob Morris Mary Morris Woolma Donovan Foster Donovan.

Although there is no indication of where this document originated we believe it to have been in the American Colonies--possibly in view of the names in the area around New York. While the posting of individual property was and is commonplace it is highly unusual to find a group doing so collectively and this would most likely happen if each of the holdings was relatively small. The nature of the notice suggests that the properties were contiguous and were probably farmland. In the England of the day the number of small independent farmers owning contiguous property was not large--small farmers usually worked as tenants to a large landowner who typically enjoyed hunting and shooting over his estates. In addition it was far more common in America than in England for members of the same family to have land adjacent or in proximity to one another as may have been the case above with the Morrises and Donovans. Small farmers were the backbone of Colonial America and this document is a tribute to their spirit of enterprise and independence which was soon to come to fruition in another form.

A UNIQUE AND FASCINATING DOCUMENT AND A RARE ITEM OF COLONIAL AMERICANA. unknown
1896315329Hacienda Rosendal Tantojón Pánuco Vera.Cruz Mexico 1896. 2 pages; with original envelope featuring pen and ink portrait of a bear on the back; and with clipped article from the "Mexican Herald" of December 24 1895. 4to. Old folds. 2 pages; with original envelope featuring pen and ink portrait of a bear on the back; and with clipped article from the "Mexican Herald" of December 24 1895. 4to. A charming tribute with subtle overtures from three Swedish bachelors living in Mexico to three California sisters whose hunting prowess was described in an article in the "Mexican Herald." Headlined "Three California Dianas. They Kill Bears and Panthers and Olive in Particular is an Expert Shot" the article describes the sisters who live in the "wilderness above Ukiah California" as "sportswomen of rare talent" and gives an account of their encounter with a bear which ends up with their treeing and killing the animal. The letter reads in part: ".we think it would interest you to know that your bravery and pluck are known even outside your own Country . We have read and reread the article and . we could not restrain ourselves from sending our respects. Down here you would find a great field for your guns. We have all kinds of big game . it is nothing unusual to meet an 8 or 9 feet sic tiger on the roads when we are out riding. We will described one of our hunting experiences that might interest you." The letter goes on to relate how after wounding and trailing a deer towards a lagoon "a big Puma jumped out from the jungle and pounced upon our poor wounded deer. A rifleshot and we had both deer and Puma." The letter continues: "We are three Swedes 26 28 & 31 years old and run a fruit plantation in partnership in the district of Huasteca on the shores of the beautiful Panuco river. We have been here only 5 months but we have found the prospects for the future very bright. We would greatly enjoy a few lines from you as to ascertain whether our epistle ever reached you . and if the article is a ghost-story or not." They close "With admiration for the 3 brave Dianas in California. unknown
