A bright copy with some fraying at the top of the spine panel and light foxing throughout. With the ownership signature of Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch son of the better known mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch on the title page and dated 1842. Cloth. Nathaniel I. Bowditch was Vice President of the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1856-1862. Townshend was a skeptic later a supporter of animal magnetism. The first edition was London 1840 with the title "Facts in Mesmerism With Reasons for a Dispassionate Inquiry Into it" and went through a number of editions. Robert H. Collyer has added an appendix "Report of the Boston Committee on Animal Magnetism as Exhibited by Dr. Robert H. Collyer" to this edition "First American Edition" as stated on the title page There was also a Harper and Brothers edition in 1841 with a page count of 388 pages. Bindery's imprint "Chapman & Hall 186 Strand" at top of front endpaper. Solid text block light wear to corners and hinges. Faint toning to endpapers a near fine copy. Includes a bookplate belonging to Charles Dickens affixed to front endpaper with a lion facing left. Another bookplate from the estate sale of Charles Dickens with the notation: "Gadshill Place June 1870." Gad's Hill Place in Higham Kent was Dickens' home from 1857 until his passing on June 9 1870. The contents of the library at Gad's Hill were hand-written by Carles Dickens Jr. who inherited the library upon his father's passing. This copy is found in the Dickens Jr. catalogue Henry Sotheran's catalogue c. 1871 and the Stonehouse catalogue 1878 1935.<br /> In addition to writing and painting Chauncy Hare Townshend 1798-1868 studied mesmerism throughout the 1830s. He succeeded Dr. John Elliotson as the chief British exponent of mesmerism. Elliotson introduced Townshend to Charles Dickens and the pair bonded over their mutual interests in hypnotic arts and writing. They remained lifelong friends. Townshend's 1859 poetry book The Three Gates was dedicated to Dickens and in return Dickens dedicated Great Expectations 1861 to Townshend. One of the Sonnets in this volume is addressed "To the Author of Oliver Twist etc. Chapman and Hall unknown

Bound in full tan leather by 19th century Glasgow bookbinders Carss & Co.; marbled edges and endpapers. Published 3 years after the death of British writer John Sterling 1806-1844 at age 38 these two volumes contain much of his output as well as a memoir of his life by Charles Hare. Included are most of his fantasy tales among which are the novella The Onyx Ring five of the fantasy tales that were imbedded in the novel Arthur Coningsby and the longer short story "A Chronicle of England" which Murray Ewing describes as "a delightful fairy-haunted picture of England in the days before it received its first human inhabitants." John Sterling had long languished in obscurity but today he is hailed by many as an important progenitor of fantastical literature. In the Encyclopedia of Fantasy John Clute and John Grant argue that Sterling has to be considered "the most significant UK pioneer of fantasy." In The Dedalus Book of British Fantasy: The 19th Century Brian Stableford states: Sterling would surely have become one of the leading writers of his day had he not died so young and he might well have become the most important nineteenth century fantasy writer; his prose fantasies are more various and more adventurous than any other contemporary work. Very good condition: both volumes are clean and tight with some rubbing along edges of covers and spine.
