The third edition of this work scarce in all contemporary editions.First published in 1859 in this work the British lawyer and supporter of electoral reform Thomas Hare presents his proposed electoral system in which he advocates for the single transferable vote system as a way to ensure that minority voices were represented in legislative bodies.John Stuart Mill described this system as 'the greatest improvement of which the system of representative government is susceptible; an improvement which exactly meets and cures the grand and what before seemed inherent defect of the representative system'.His system is now used in elections in Ireland Malta in Australian Senate and state elections and in several cities in the U.S. New Zealand and Scotland.Rebacked with endpapers renewed. Douglas' father the 9th Marquess of Queensberry publicly accused Wilde of being homosexual leading to a trial and Wilde's imprisonment. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally generally smart with light marks and rubbing to the boards. Marks are heavier to the rear board. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Hinges are tender. Front endpaper and half-title are detached but present.
