First edition first impression 1000 copies printed; presentation copy from one of the contributors inscribed on the front free endpaper "With love and affection Norman Hancock May 23 1931. And apologies for the Rabelaisia!" Hancock contributed the short story "War from the Ranks" described as "admirable" by John O'London's Weekly. That review continued "Here told with directness and entire simplicity we have the experiences of a lance-corporal in the infantry; this is more genuinely illuminating than a vast deal of the stuff that has appeared some of it with great success in the guise of fiction" newspaper clipping tipped-in dated in pencil 27.6.31. Hancock remains elusive but he may be the author of Interlude for John Dent 1932 and An Innocent Grows Up Dent 1947. This is an interesting Great War anthology comprising pieces by Conal O'Riordan Charles Edmonds C. W. Grundy concerning the WAAC John Brophy two contributions "Miles" Stephen Southwold E. C. Pattison Hancock and two by Partridge "Byways of Soldiers' Slang" and "From Two Angles" the latter written under his pseudonym of Corrie Denison. It is divided into three sections "Conceivably True" "Concerning the True" and "Actually True". Octavo. Original orange cloth gilt lettered spine top edge yellow. With dust jacket. Jacket spine toned split at rear fold and with lateral closed-tears across spine panel extensive old paper repairs to verso top edge a little dusty fore-edge a touch foxed front board slightly splayed yet this remains a very good copy bright and sharp in the scarce dust jacket. hardcover

The 1950 Limited Deluxe Edition which was issued simultaneously with the trade edition. 250 copies were issued in the Limited Deluxe Edition but this copy specifically is among the first 100 copies in the limitation #21 which were the only ones Eric Partridege signed. Bound in a full dark-leather as well and includes bright gilt-design and lettering along the front panel and spine respectively. A bit of light scuffing to the panels and light wear along the spine ends. Still though solidly VG to VG and very presentable. Thick octavo 804 pgs. In a long wonderful career of offering up linguistic and lexical oddities this remains one of Eric Partridge's most beloved works. Theodore Brun Limited unknown

A unique copy Inscribed to author and professor John Fain who was friends with the Agrarians close with Andrew Lytle at Vanderbilt and later with Harry Crews at Univ.of Florida. Fain has anotated nearly every page in pencil and apparently mailed the book to Partridge who intern commented on neary every page in ink and inscribed "To John Fain who has so enriched this copy with his comments corrections additions gratefully Eric. Sorry! this implies that I had presented him the copy. His part is the nobler one of having purchased it. 28 February 1978 but not despatched until somewhat later.Sent to Professor John T Fain 3025 S.W. 1st ave Gainesville Florida 32607 U.S.A." While his biographical details are scant he was also the author "On Democracy" 1866 and "The Making of the American Nation" his best-known work Here is a history and polemic on the issue of Home Rule for Ireland. Widely-held by institutions but rather uncommon in the Trade. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Distinctive cloth binding: the front panel is diagonally divided between green and yellow; titling in black. Clean text; xxvi 190 pages.This is an ASSOCIATION COPY with stamps of the "Irish Republican Library" in New York City. There is a previous owner stamp "Patrick McKenna" on the FFEP with a penciled donation notation "Donated by Liam Kearney Liam Lynch Club". Lynch prominent in the Irish War of Independence became Commander of the IRA during the Civil War. There are two stamps of the "Irish Republican Library" on the last pages of book along with a pasted-down inventory number. This New York library was important to the Irish diaspora and its support for an independent Ireland. Textblock is lightly tanned; the front gutter has been reinforced with a linen tape. Light wear to the margins particularly to the head and foot of the spine. The yellow diagonal shows some soiling. An historically-important subject and an intriguing object from the Irish struggle.
