With 25 beautiful black and white illustrations by Bernard Partridge. A lovely near fine copy the binding square and firm the extremities slightly rubbed the spine and tops of the boards very lightly faded. The contents with just a little faint foxing to the margins of pages 42 to 52 are otherwise clean throughout and without stamps or inscriptions. A beautifully bound and illustrated collection of poetry and dramatic verse. 'Proverbs in Porcelain' was first published in 1877 without illustrations and without the addition of 'Au Revoir'. Dobson became known in the late 19th century for being at the forefront of a movement of poets who used long medieval forms of French verse to write poetry in English with George Eliot among his supporters. Inscribed by the author on the front panel: ''Dear Dr Robb-Smith I've come across a spare copy of my Christmas card & so send it to you merely please! � titre de curiosit�. Eric Partridge. PS. For your entertainment I've annotated it.'' There are indeed a few annotations but their entertainment value is practically zero. Loosely inserted is an Autograph Letter Signed by Eric Partridge and dated 10 March 1961: about 120 words to Dr Robb-Smith partly discussing the original use of the phrase ''First catch your hare''.
