Written by Calvin Keith agent for Almina Partridge mother of United States Generals Samuel Partridge and John Milton Partridge. Almina is attempting to find out what real estate holdings her late husband has in New Orleans and Smith informs her in small part: ".I found myself in a rather awkward predicament. The Judge informed me the agent he had made the appointment Mr. Parker had admitted in Court that he had been in the State Prison for passing counterfeit money and informed me he could not now be removed without showing his present incapacity to manage her property. This information could only be obtained by depositions from the place where he resides.The last agent has not obtained any of the funds & I have much confidence in believing that his bail will not permit him to remove the funds and certainly not without securing him. On the whole I consider it rather a bad business & wish myself fairly out of it." 1834378New York: Published by the Author 1834. 8vo. 190 x 120 mm. 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches. viii 9-179 pp. Original cloth boards rebacked with cloth remnants of original spine laid down. Light foxing throughout. With faults a good sound copy. Second edition originally published in New York by H. Wallis in 1823 which included information on British practices. In the self-published edition of 1834 Partridge remove much of this material and focused more on the extraction of colors from wood the chemistry of scouring and dyeing and color preparation. The first 40 pages of the book describe in detail the methods and materials used in scouring raw wool and cotton to ensure that all oils and natural elements are removed and cleansed out. The next 100 pages are devoted to dyes. Partridge discusses in detail the which natural materials produce colors pigments how to make the extractions and finally how to mix the extracts with solvents and oils to create a color that will fix when applied to textile material. The final part of the book has to do with preparing silks and cotton and some variations on the techniques for producing and fixing colors. A notice on the verso of the title-page reads "The author informs Manufacturers and Dyers that he is at all times willing and desirous to give any information and recipes that may be in his power respecting the manufacture of woollens and dying free of cost." In addition to writing and publishing his Practical Treatise William Partridge was a textile dyer and seller who also built a business in NYC that imported and extracted pigments from wood sources which was to become one of the largest of its kind on the East Coast before the Civil War. He has however a rather scant representation in the trade. First published in 1866; this is a Good copy of a Later Printing. A well-received book that is quite scarce in the Trade today. This is a "Project Book" for the right person as it is an ex-libris copy that is disbound. Maroon cloth binding ruled in black on the covers with titling in gilt on the front cover and spine. Clean text; lxii 591 pages with an errata slip tipped onto the rear endpaper. Contains two large format studio prints and 82 glossy gelatin silver prints laid into double-sided paper sleeves with cut-out rectangular frames. Neatly captioned throughout in ink on the paper sleeves. Owner's name: "J.E.C. Partridge" in ink on front cover. Boards are a little darkened and rubbed a few prints are faded very good.<br /> <br /> A notable album of images compiled by Lieutenant J.E.C. "Birdie" Partridge an officer in the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers and founder of the British Army Rugby Union ARU in 1906. The album documents the activities of Partridge's militia unit throughout South Africa during the Boer War. The unit is identified as the "46th R.E.". Included are images of the militia and several R.E. officers on the march and performing various duties and at leisure at various camps. Also included are images of Boer farms and families and Boer prisoners at Cape Town.<br /> <br /> Partridge was promoted to lieutenant in March 1901 and he represented South African rugby teams during the Boer war when he was serving there. After the war he became a prominent international rugby union player and founded the Army Rugby Union. The album likely includes more than one image of Partridge in particular in one print of an "X-mas dinner 1901". A well-preserved historically important collection of images. hardcover

William Partridge probably took most of the Alaska views during the summer of 1886 when he journeyed on the steam boat Ancon. With the discovery of gold nearby in 1880 Juneau was born. But as this photo shows the new community consisted mainly of shacks for some time. unknown

A prior owner's name is in ink on the first free end page with the date of February 7th 1833 which name is repeated on the last free end page. The rear 30 pages of this copy has a dampness stain to the upper two inches of the pages. 288 pages including 8 pages of Idioms and familiar expressions and proverbs in two columns in English and in French. Illustrated with a frontispiece of the author from an engraving and a view of the A. L. S. & M. Academy Middletown Conn. OCLC reports only 40 libraries and institutions have a copy of this title. Lynch prominent in the Irish War of Independence became Commander of the IRA during the Civil War. There are two stamps of the "Irish Republican Library" on the last pages of book along with a pasted-down inventory number. This New York library was important to the Irish diaspora and its support for an independent Ireland. Textblock is lightly tanned; the front gutter has been reinforced with a linen tape. Light wear to the margins particularly to the head and foot of the spine. The yellow diagonal shows some soiling. An historically-important subject and an intriguing object from the Irish struggle.
