Distinctive cloth binding: the front panel is diagonally divided between green and yellow; titling in black. Clean text; xxvi 190 pages. The front paste-down has an interesting prize label awarded to Nicholas Moloney for "Vocal Music" in 1891. Light rub to the margins; yellow section of the binding typically shows its soiling. Clean text; xxvi 190 pages.This is an ASSOCIATION COPY with stamps of the "Irish Republican Library" in New York City. There is a previous owner stamp "Patrick McKenna" on the FFEP with a penciled donation notation "Donated by Liam Kearney Liam Lynch Club". Lynch prominent in the Irish War of Independence became Commander of the IRA during the Civil War. There are two stamps of the "Irish Republican Library" on the last pages of book along with a pasted-down inventory number. This New York library was important to the Irish diaspora and its support for an independent Ireland. Textblock is lightly tanned; the front gutter has been reinforced with a linen tape. Light wear to the margins particularly to the head and foot of the spine. The yellow diagonal shows some soiling. An historically-important subject and an intriguing object from the Irish struggle. Held by sixteen libraries in the UK it is uncommon in the Trade. Cloth bound 190 pages. Although ex-libris this is one of the best copies Quercus has seen. The text usually well-tanned is still bright and fresh. The half-title page is starting but hoilds strongly. The striking cover with gold and green opposed diagonally is quite bright and clean although removal of a spine label has left some glue residue. A very respectable copy of this significant work of 19th Century Irish history. In an archival plastic protector. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. T. A 16mo of 6 3/4 by 4 1/8 inches with the title block missing from the spine wear to the leather at the edges of the boards spine ends and joints. A prior owner's name is in ink on the first free end page with the date of February 7th 1833 which name is repeated on the last free end page. The rear 30 pages of this copy has a dampness stain to the upper two inches of the pages. 288 pages including 8 pages of Idioms and familiar expressions and proverbs in two columns in English and in French. Illustrated with a frontispiece of the author from an engraving and a view of the A. L. S. & M. Academy Middletown Conn. OCLC reports only 40 libraries and institutions have a copy of this title. Partridge 1858-1939 operated a Portland Ore. photography studio with his brother Edward between 1885 and 1889. This studio was apparently a western office of the Partridge Photo Co. of Boston Mass. William Partridge probably took most of the Alaska views during the summer of 1886 when he journeyed on the steam boat Ancon.The Treadwell gold mine was on the south side of Douglas Island nearly a kilometre east of downtown Douglas and southeast of downtown Juneau. Owned and operated by John Treadwell the mine was composed of four sub-sites and was at one time the largest hard rock gold mine in the world employing over 2000 people. unknown

William Partridge probably took most of the Alaska views during the summer of 1886 when he journeyed on the steam boat Ancon. With the discovery of gold nearby in 1880 Juneau was born. But as this photo shows the new community consisted mainly of shacks for some time. unknown

Contains two large format studio prints and 82 glossy gelatin silver prints laid into double-sided paper sleeves with cut-out rectangular frames. Neatly captioned throughout in ink on the paper sleeves. Owner's name: "J.E.C. Partridge" in ink on front cover. Boards are a little darkened and rubbed a few prints are faded very good.<br /> <br /> A notable album of images compiled by Lieutenant J.E.C. "Birdie" Partridge an officer in the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers and founder of the British Army Rugby Union ARU in 1906. The album documents the activities of Partridge's militia unit throughout South Africa during the Boer War. The unit is identified as the "46th R.E.". Included are images of the militia and several R.E. officers on the march and performing various duties and at leisure at various camps. Also included are images of Boer farms and families and Boer prisoners at Cape Town.<br /> <br /> Partridge was promoted to lieutenant in March 1901 and he represented South African rugby teams during the Boer war when he was serving there. After the war he became a prominent international rugby union player and founded the Army Rugby Union. The album likely includes more than one image of Partridge in particular in one print of an "X-mas dinner 1901". A well-preserved historically important collection of images. hardcover
