In September 1862 Partridge was selected to travel to Italy to attend Giuseppe Garibaldi who had been shot just above the right ankle during his march on Rome that summer. Unfortunately he failed to spot the bullet and if it had not been for the intervention of the French surgeon Auguste Nélaton he would have lost the leg. unknown
