This grouping of 36 issues all published was apparently bound together by the publisher after all the parts were issued. Second edition, 12mo, xxxv, [1, blank], 133, [11, index]pp., with half-title, engraved frontispiece and nine additional full-page engravings showing two boxers fighting (perhaps Dan Mendoza and Richard Humphries), demonstrating the various boxing techniques taught in the text, some light off-setting, a few pages have been trimmed up to the text, especially at the fore-edge, but with no loss, early paper endpapers, nicely bound in full calf, hand sewn headbands, hand tooled edges, hand lettered spine. The author of this guide indicates he seeks to appeal specifically to the gentleman wanting to protect himself from 'the insolence so peculiar to the manners of the lower order of people in this country.' But he has special advice for professional practitioners of the pugilistic art, with hints for preparing for a scheduled fight which include taking 'a pint of best red wine mulled, with a tablespoonful of brandy' on the morning itself. This manual was written at an important juncture in the sport, and focuses on two practitioners who impelled boxing forward greatly - Daniel Mendoza and Richard "The Gentleman Boxer" Humphries, who famously fought three bare-knuckle bouts between 1788 and 1790 (the third of which was the first time spectators were charged an entry-payment to a sporting event). Before Mendoza, boxers generally stood still and merely swapped punches. Mendoza's 'scientific style' consisted of more than simply battering opponents into submission and included much defensive movement. He developed an entirely new style of boxing, incorporating such defensive strategies as what he called 'side-stepping,' moving around, ducking, blocking, and generally avoiding punches. At the time, this was revolutionary, and Mendoza was able to overcome much heavier opponents as a result of this new style. Though he stood only five feet seven inches and weighed only 160 pounds, Mendoza was England's sixteenth Heavyweight Champion from 1792 to 1795, and is the only middleweight to ever win the Heavyweight Championship of the World. Mendoza helped transform the popular English stereotype of a Jew from a weak, defenceless person into someone deserving of respect. He is said to have been the first Jew to talk to the King, George III. Mendoza was second for Tom Molineaux, a freed Virginia slave, in his fights. In 1789 - the year this book was issued in London - he opened his own boxing academy there. Hartley, 1578; Extremely rare, ESTC locates a single copy of the first edition at Yale which is tentatively dated 1784, and two copies of this second edition (British Library and Yale).

Octavo 20th-century three-quarter red morocco gilt raised bands marbled endpapers all edges gilt. $3000.Early edition of this boxing classic with 50 engraved plates including an engraved vignette title page in Volume I 45 portraits and four folding plates of boxing matches handsomely bound by Bayntun.Egan was probably one of boxing's most enthusiastic and ardent disciples. Egan devotes a major part of Boxiana to a history of the boxing careers of about over a hundred boxers often including a round to round account of the famous fights of a particular boxer such as Jim Belcher Tom Cribb Dan Mendoza Tom Molyneaux 'Gentleman' John Jackson and many others. First published in 1812 Boxiana proved so popular that Egan expanded the work to an eventual four volumes; the fourth volume was written by another author after Egan briefly lost the rights to the series but after securing the rights to the title he published a further two volumes as part of a New Series. With Volume II only of the New Series. Without the portrait of Alexander Reed in the last volume but with an additional plate depicting ""A Sparring Match at the Fives Court"" in Volume III. A large and important depiction of an exhibition sparring match held in Fives Court in London's Little St. Martin's Street a tennis and fives court hired for such events the participants unlike a regular bare-knuckle bout being fitted with gloves "mittens" or "mufflers". The contestants shown were Ned Turner "The Out-and-Outer" who had killed a man in the ring serving time for manslaughter and Jack Randall "The Prime Irish Lad" unbeaten throughout 12 years of ring activity. The two had fought an epic fight in 1818 which Randall won to become the Lightweight champion. A large number of famous pugilists are pictured in the audience not always accurately Jem Belcher the famed champion and the first real sporting celebrity in the modern sense is shown although he was dead and it is a fair portrait of "The Fancy" as the mix of often raffish sporting professionals and upscale spectators including nobility came to be known. Archie Moore's personal scrapbook evidently started in Frankfurt in the period surrounding his fight with Hans Kalbfell and extending onward. Moore used the scrapbook to house other photographs and memorabilia titling it "Archie Moore Albumn sic - various 'celebs' Boxers." The loose photos show Moore posed with various friends and acquaintances. The scrapbook contains three contact sheets of stills from an unidentified film a picture of Mr. T. an inscribed program from Mickey Walker several original photographs from an unidentified boxing match and a single leaf extract from the Sacramento Union discussing Moore's youth project signed by Moore in 1966. <br /> <br /> Moore was a frequent victim of racism early in his career and often fought abroad. His career spanned several eras in boxing from the 1940s onward. He fought a young Cassius Clay at age 45 when Clay was 20. This album starts during the period when he held the world light heavyweight championship and continues through his retirement from boxing. He led a varied life upon retirement starting a charity for youth in San Diego acting in several films and helping train George Foreman for his fights into the 1990s among other activities. A very nice personal scrapbook from an incredible career which we have left in its found state with the photographs loosely interleaved with the pages. Generally very good well used but cared for with bright contents and some wear to binding. unknown books

Iwana Muskogee Oklahoma / From Young Togo fighter and jiu jitsu wrestler Muskogee Oklaâ€. Young Togo was a lightweight and sometimes featherweight or bantamweight boxer from Fort Smith Arkansas who debuted around 1907. He seemed to have been a popular fighter based on contemporaneous newspaper articles. Following a draw with Togo “Battling†Nelson described him as “the toughest piece of Japanese flesh that ever stepped into a prize ring†and stated that “he was game to the core.
