1980CAT0118Various Places 1980. Illustrated calf "Frankfurt" binding 9 x 10 inches. With twelve scrapbook pages and twenty-eight photographs and two programs laid in. Very Good. Archie Moore's personal scrapbook evidently started in Frankfurt in the period surrounding his fight with Hans Kalbfell and extending onward. Moore used the scrapbook to house other photographs and memorabilia titling it "Archie Moore Albumn sic - various 'celebs' Boxers." The loose photos show Moore posed with various friends and acquaintances. The scrapbook contains three contact sheets of stills from an unidentified film a picture of Mr. T. an inscribed program from Mickey Walker several original photographs from an unidentified boxing match and a single leaf extract from the Sacramento Union discussing Moore's youth project signed by Moore in 1966. <br /> <br /> Moore was a frequent victim of racism early in his career and often fought abroad. His career spanned several eras in boxing from the 1940s onward. He fought a young Cassius Clay at age 45 when Clay was 20. This album starts during the period when he held the world light heavyweight championship and continues through his retirement from boxing. He led a varied life upon retirement starting a charity for youth in San Diego acting in several films and helping train George Foreman for his fights into the 1990s among other activities. A very nice personal scrapbook from an incredible career which we have left in its found state with the photographs loosely interleaved with the pages. Generally very good well used but cared for with bright contents and some wear to binding. unknown books

All cards have slight toning and rubbing near edges with the exception of one of the two Jack Johnson cards that has a bumped corner and creasing at center. 1918List3130Muskogee Oklahoma 1918. Real photo postcard measuring 3 ¼ x 5 ½ inches. A real photo postcard depicting Japanese-American boxer Young Togo inscribed verso: “To K. Iwana Muskogee Oklahoma / From Young Togo fighter and jiu jitsu wrestler Muskogee Oklaâ€. Young Togo was a lightweight and sometimes featherweight or bantamweight boxer from Fort Smith Arkansas who debuted around 1907. He seemed to have been a popular fighter based on contemporaneous newspaper articles. Following a draw with Togo “Battling†Nelson described him as “the toughest piece of Japanese flesh that ever stepped into a prize ring†and stated that “he was game to the core. He fought clean and took his beating like a gamester†then noting that Young Togo had been “full of malaria†at the time.1 In the same article sports journalist Otto Floto described Togo as “one of the very toughest boys of his weight†who “seems to be invincible.†Togo may be Koriyama Kokichi the head coach of YÅ«jirÅ Watanabe’s Nippon KentÅ Club founded in 1921 in Tokyo; Boxing: A Quick Guide 1923 a book written by the pair in Japanese identifies Kokichi as “Young Togoâ€.<br /> <br /> 1 “What Nelson Thinks Of Fort Smith Fans By Battling Nelson†Southwest American March 1 1912 5. unknown

19544197Kilmainham Ireland: Phoenix Boxing Club 1954. Poster. Near Fine. The Phoenix Boxing Club is an historic Dublin club that was established in the 1920s and still remains active today. A promotional poster printed in black ink onto robust paper measuring 30 x 20 inch wide. The poster advertises an impressive line up of bouts to be held in the National Stadium featuring Irish Northern County and Irish International champions on the fight card. Poster w. fold marks some soil and creases minor edge wear w. pin holes at upper right corner and two stray ink marks. An amazing survivor considering the posters intended use. A nice piece of scarce and ephemeral Irish Boxing memorabilia. Printed by "Ardiff" in Kilmainham Dublin Ireland. Phoenix Boxing Club unknown

The Walker broadside is significant in that Black heavyweights were essentially eliminated from fighting for the heavyweight championship. After Jack Johnson white America wanted no part of a black heavyweight until Joe Louis came on the scene in the 1930s. It is doubtful Walker's record would have made a top ten fighter but he did fight George Godfrey. The second broadside features a list of western prizefighters including Cowboy Billy Owens a Native American heavyweight. </p>

A scarce manual for members of the Singapore Boxing Association this example dates from the 1940s pages 13-19 containing examples of contract forms dated "194" in print the final digit to be added by hand. The Singapore Amateur Boxing Association as it is today called was founded in 1930 and is the national controlling body for the sport of amateur boxing responsible for the promotion co-ordination and organisation of all local activities. Octavo 19 pages; wire-stitched in printed stiff paper wrappers. Ownership inscription to inside front wrapper dated Singapore 1946; staples corroded; a very good copy. The last part section deals with the championship fights fought in America under the Queensberry Rules including the Corbett and Sullivan and Corbett and Mitchell fights; Fitzsimmons fighting Maher Corbett and Jeffries; and Jeffries' fights Sharkey Corbett Ruhlin and Fitzsimmons. 1940215031940. Archive of three photographs from the 1930s-1940s captures three African American boxers. One photo shows two boxers the "Gold Dust Twins" in action in the ring while another shows "Black Jack Lorenzo Pack" posing with fists clenched in the ring. Black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring 10" x 8". The first photograph features two muscular African American boxers standing side by side in a boxing ring both wearing classic boxing trunks and laced-up gloves. Their expressions are serious reflecting the intensity of their profession. A handwritten inscription on the back identifies them as the "Gold Dust Twins." This moniker was historically used to describe dynamic duos however specific information about African American boxers using this nickname in the 1940s is unclear. He subsequently lost to James Braddock in 1935. Both fights were named "Fight of the Year" by "The Ring" magazine. Welsh a Melbourne resident was born in 1871 debuted in 1892 and fought as a featherweight. He is listed as fighting 49 bouts and 286 rounds. Fred Segar a resident of Unley Adelaide debuted in 1921 as a welterweight. He boxed 21 bouts and 287 rounds retiring in 1931. His parents are listed as Frederick Segar and Rose Jackson BoxerRec.com<br /> <br /> The "Barrier Miner" newspaper Broken Hill NSW includes a "Boxing" summary 12 Jan 1922 stating that "'Red' Mitchell arrived by the express this morning. Since boxing Johnny Knowles here he has been engaged in bouts with Fred. Segar and Jonnny Mock. 'Micko' Walsh a champion featherweight boxer of Victoria is now in Adelaide. Walsh is suffering from paralysis. See NLA website<br /> <br /> The image of Will Young the promoter is quite self-aggrandizing. Titled "WILL" above and "Mr. W. Young.' below his portrait is surrounded by decorative border with a boxing glove and training gear motif. The other image is an oval portrait of the two boxers Walsh and Segar one seated the other standing. The date '1921' appears in the border of the image. <br /> Both have paper envelopes one labeled Will young Promotor sic and Micko Walsh & Fred Segar.<br /> <br /> Glass plates 6 1/2" x 4 3/4".
