This issue is probably one of the most important issues of the 1940s. The historic first fight between heavyweight champ Joe Louis and challenger Billy Conn is nicely covered with words and pictures. Conn ahead on points thanks to some great boxing skills blows his chance by trying to knock out Louis late in the fight. Despite the victory Louis lost the PR battle as Conn the smaller man was seen as a hero by almost defeating the champ. Boxer Sammy Angott is featured on the cover.</p> The Ring Inc., books

This issue provides annual rankings and features an article on Sugar Ray Robinson as the fighter of the year. Robinson regained his middleweight crown by beating Randy Turpin in their second bout. Ring names the Walcott-Charles bout as the fight of the year. Walcott's knockout of Charles earned him the heavyweight title. </p> books

Charles-Alexandre-Balthazar-François-de-Paule baron de Baert-Duholant naît à Saint-Omer dans l'ancienne province de l'Artois dans le royaume de France sous le règne du roi Louis XV. Il se livre dans sa jeunesse au goût qu'il avait pour les voyages visita l'Angleterre en 1787 et 1788 puis l'Espagne et rentre à Saint-Omer au commencement de la Révolution française. Élu député du département du Pas-de-Calais à l'Assemblée législative le 31 août 1791 il vote constamment avec la minorité modérée ; dans la séance du 21 octobre 1791 il parle en faveur de la liberté des cultes. Il est un des sept députés qui le 20 avril 1792 votent contre la déclaration de guerre à l'Autriche ; le 20 juin lors de l'invasion des Tuileries il reste auprès de Louis XVI pour le protéger. Découragé par les événements du 10 août il part pour l'Amérique revint à Saint-Omer après le 18 brumaire et épouse Mlle de Montboissier la fille de Charles-Philippe-Simon de Montboissier-Beaufort-Canillac et petite-fille de Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes. Leurs fille épouse le comte Nicolas Michel Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau des Forts. Élu député par le collège de département du Loiret le 22 août 1815 il fait partie de la minorité dans la Chambre introuvable et renonce à la vie politique après cette législature. Baert-Duholant a publié plusieurs ouvrages fruits des notes réunies dans ses voyages ; le plus important est le Tableau de la Grande-Bretagne de l'Irlande et des possessions anglaises dans les quatre parties du monde 4 vol. in-8° avec cartes figures Paris 1800. Sir Harry Preston (1860-1936) was at once a successful Brighton hotelier, keen boxing enthusiast and general all-round sportsman. His autobiography contains much material on boxing luminaries including Jack Johnson, Jim Driscoll, Jack Dempsey and many others. He was knighted in 1933 for services to sport and charity. Preston is buried at Cuckfield. UNCOMMON IN THIS CONDITION.
