Checco Cavicchi, Cesco per i suoi concittadini di Pieve di Cento, è stato un pugile italiano che ha combattuto nella categoria dei pesi massimi ottenendo importanti successi tanto da diventare negli anni '50 l'idolo di tutti gli italiani che lo ritenevano "il nuovo Carnera". Cavicchi riuscì a portare 60.000 persone allo stadio comunale di Bologna per il suo famoso match per la corona europea dei pesi massimi contro il favorito tedesco Heinz Neuhaus. Oltre ad una fulminante carriera tra i Dilettanti, come professionista ha combattuto in 89 incontri vincendone 71 dei quali 45 per KO. La sua bonarietà e serietà facevano sì che per tutti non fosse solo un campione ma anche un "personaggio di casa" al quale voler bene. Nel libro oltre alla storia di Cavicchi e agli articoli e i ricordi di giornalisti che l'hanno incontrato e intervistato figurano moltissime immagini del fotografo, Walter Breveglieri, che lo ha ritratto dentro e fuori dal ring. Non manca una ricca parte statistica con tutti gli incontri disputati da professionista e i titoli e le prime pagine dei giornali che riportavano gli avvenimenti.

La storia è incentrata sulla crescita di Yuu, giovane liceale che, per via di un carattere introverso, timido e impacciato, diventa la vittima preferita di un gruppo di bulli che lo tormentano, tanto da costringerlo a lasciare la scuola. Per sopravvivere Yuu comincia ad apprendere i rudimenti del pugilato, finché non scompare dalla circolazione per un anno intero. Al suo ritorno affronterà i teppisti che lo avevano tormentato, e troverà un suo posto nella società.

Yu Kamishiro è un liceale che non riesce a trovare il suo posto né a scuola, né in casa, e di conseguenza non è in grado di dare un senso alla propria esistenza, in cerca di una sua "terra promessa", Yu si aggira di notte, per le strade della città, conquistandosi la nomea di "cacciatore di teppisti di Shimokita", e diventando l'oggetto del terrore e del rancore di questi ultimi, intanto, Yoshii del liceo Seta ha sguinzagliato laica contro Masakì Izawa, il "leader carismatico della strada", per regolare un conto in sospeso tra loro due. Intervenuto per salvare Masakì, caduto in una trappola tesagli prima dello scontro, Yu viene sfidato a duello dallo schermidore. Lo scontro tra I pugni e la spada è violento - ma, alla fine, è Yu ad aggiudicarsi, seppure a fatica, la vittoria. Shogo Midorikawa, che ha assistito a questa impressionante battaglia, decide di sfidare il suo amico Yu, per mettere alla prova la propria forza, inizialmente, il ragazzo è confuso, ma infine decide di rispondere lealmente alla richiesta del suo amico, e i due si sfidano a duello!
