This issue is probably one of the most important issues of the 1940s. The historic first fight between heavyweight champ Joe Louis and challenger Billy Conn is nicely covered with words and pictures. Conn ahead on points thanks to some great boxing skills blows his chance by trying to knock out Louis late in the fight. Despite the victory Louis lost the PR battle as Conn the smaller man was seen as a hero by almost defeating the champ. Boxer Sammy Angott is featured on the cover.</p> The Ring Inc., books

However Cerdan would die in a plan crash in 1949 before his rematch with LaMotta. An article about Rocky Graziano's legal problems is also featured. For the first half of the last century boxing rivaled baseball as the most popular sport in America. Football and basketball were small potatoes at that time and boxing ws often a close second to baseball. However by the1950s boxing started to decline a bit and according to Nat Fleischer in an article on the subject. The reason was TV which was forcing many of the small boxing clubs out of business as they couldn’t compete with TV. This is a very early article on the subject and historically important to the sport. There are also articles on Joey Maxim Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles. Great issue! </p> The Ring Inc. books

The cover features Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott which set the stage for a return bout on June 25 1948. After a difficult first fight which many believed Walcott won Louis won by a knockout in the second bout. This issue provides a lot of information on Joe Louis including a detailed account of his ring earnings. Perhaps the significance of this contest was that it would be only the third time in history that two African Americans would fight for the heavyweight title. However boxing’s' color line was not as rigid as some other sports and by the late 1940s there had been several African American world champions. </p> The Ring Inc., books
