Dopo aver sbaragliato il campo tra i dilettanti Liston portò a termine una delle più rapide e devastanti scalate al titolo mondiale dei pesi massimi, culminata nei due incontri fulminei con Floyd Patterson. Finito in mano alla mala che lo aveva tolto di galera e che controllava la boxe, fu costretto a eseguire gli ordini del boss Frankie Carbo fino alla fine dei suoi giorni, quando fu trovato senza vita a causa di un'iniezione di eroina pur avendo il terrore degli aghi.
