Un racconto degli eventi politici e militari che segnarono la storia del Giappone nel XVI secolo; un lasso di tempo che rappresenta la parte conclusiva del Sengoku jidai, il periodo degli Stati combattenti, caratterizzato da un forte decentramento politico e da un'elevata bellicosità tra i vari clan che si dividevano le province del Sol Levante. Un'epoca durante la quale decine di famiglie di samurai si affrontarono animate dal grande sogno di unificare il paese sotto il controllo di un unico padrone. Nella prima parte del libro, l'autore prende in esame le principali istituzioni politiche, la situazione sociale ed economica, il contatto con gli europei e il rapporto con la religione cristiana. Il volume entra poi nel cuore della trattazione raccontando la vita e le gesta dei più famosi daimyo e samurai, la loro etica, le tecniche di combattimento e soprattutto come si faceva guerra nel Giappone feudale. In queste pagine si susseguono i nomi romantici di grandi guerrieri come Imagawa Yoshimoto, Oda Nobunaga, Takeda Shingen e Toyotomi Hideyoshi che - insieme ad altri - si alternarono in sanguinosissime battaglie quali Okehazama, Nagashino, Sekigahara, Tennoji e tante altre. Alla fine solo uno riuscì a portare a termine la missione assegnata dal destino: Tokugawa Ieyasu, di cui seguiremo le gesta dai primi timidi tentativi per imporre il potere fino alla sua divinizzazione. Già pubblicato con il titolo "II sole e il ciliegio" (2011), questa nuova edizione amplia il volume originario descrivendo campagne e battaglie in precedenza solo accennate ed è inoltre arricchita da mappe appositamente realizzate.
