A wonderful elegy of a long career in the last years of sail, including service aboard the square-rigger Elginshire. This is almost an early issue (possibly in a trial binding). BL gives 1947 but the author's inscription is dated October 1946.

Alfred Edward Beken e il figlio Frank iniziarono a immortalare velieri nel 1888, quando si trasferirono a Cowes nell'Isola di White, località rinomata già all'epoca per le regate. Svilupparono una tecnica raffinata che, in pochi anni, li rese celebri nel mondo della vela. A più di un secolo di distanza, l'archivio Beken, unico nel suo genere, è costituito da più di 200.000 fotografie di incalcolabile valore, dalle preziose lastre storiche in bianco e nero agli scatti digitali contemporanei di alta qualità e perfezione tecnica. Attraverso una straordinaria selezione delle immagini storiche della collezione Beken, realizzate tra la fine del XIX secolo e gli anni '30 del XX secolo, questo volume raccoglie alcuni dei più intensi e magnifici ritratti di barche a vela d'epoca mai eseguiti nelle acque di Cowes.
