A Tromso, Norvegia, l'attende un ingaggio di sei mesi su un Challenge '67, uno yacht di venti metri per settanta tonnellate, comandato da un ombroso e tenace olandese, che fa servizio di charter per sciatori estremi, fotografi naturalisti e amanti dell'avventura nelle insidiose acque a nord del circolo polare. La destinazione finale sono le isole Svalbard, l'arcipelago a pochi passi dal polo, uno dei luoghi più remoti e selvaggi dell'emisfero boreale. Questo libro è la cronaca di un'esperienza unica nel suo genere, il diario di bordo di una marinaia italiana imbarcata con un equipaggio di soli uomini in navigazione nell'Artico. Nel silenzio e nella solitudine di quei luoghi, la barca diventa un piccolo universo, in cui si incontrano e convivono charteristi provenienti da tutto il mondo. Insieme al racconto, le fotografie scattate durante la traversata restituiscono, nella loro purezza e semplicità, lo stupore di una rivelazione interiore, l'incontro con il continente di ghiaccio. Un luogo magico e fragile, e allo stesso tempo duro e pericoloso, sia per le condizioni climatiche, sia per la presenza di animali straordinari, ma spesso ostili, come i trichechi e gli orsi bianchi.

A wonderful elegy of a long career in the last years of sail, including service aboard the square-rigger Elginshire. This is almost an early issue (possibly in a trial binding). BL gives 1947 but the author's inscription is dated October 1946.

ill., br. Una barca veloce parte da Procida per partecipare un'altra volta all'Arc, la regata che ogni anno attraversa l'Atlantico da Gran Canaria ai Caraibi. A bordo un gruppo di velisti esperti, guidati dall'architetto napoletano Francesco Felice Buonfantino. Ma quella che doveva essere, se non una routine, quanto meno un'esperienza conosciuta e già vissuta, si trasforma in breve in avventura. A causa del rischio disalberamento proprio quando Cattysark è in testa alla regata, ma anche quando l'equipaggio scoprirà che, essendo nel frattempo esplosa la pandemia, il cargo che doveva riportare la barca in Italia annulla il contratto. Non resta che tornare ai Caraibi, risalire a bordo e riattraversare l'Atlantico a vela, ma questa volta contro i venti contrari. Avversità che in realtà permetteranno di sperimentare ancora una volta la bellezza e il senso stesso di navigare a vela.
