193674698N.p.: N.p. 1936. A very interesting record of a cross-country automobile trip in 1936. Original typed document of 7 pages mounted on six sheets of a heavier stock. The journal pages are in fine condition but the backing paper has some edge chipping.In 1936 this was a formidable excursion; unreliable cars bad roads xenophobia and many other hazards presented themselves to the driver on this voyage. The party consisted of five travelers; Rev. and Mrs. A. D. Deyo and their daughter Eleanor and the Rev. and Mrs. George D. Wood. It must have been a commodious vehicle. We never learn which of these people wrote this diary but we do know it was one of the men as their are frequent quips such as "The women went swimming." They all took turns driving. They left Napanoch NY on July 27th and right from the very start they had problems; in Napanoch they had to get a push from a good Samaritan. On the 3rd day they were in Ohio and the writer comments on seeing signs "Communism Will Not be Tolerated" and "Ku Klux Klan Rides Again." Car trouble again on that day. In Kansas he notes that locusts have completely stripped the fields. By the seventh day they were in New Mexico where they visited Las Animas and stayed in an adobe cottage in Taos. On the ninth day they visited cliff dwellings in Arizona and the Grand Canyon where two of the party descended into the canyon on horseback. Finally by the twelfth day they were in Barstow California. He notes in pencil that they had driven 3445 miles in 12 1/2 days. A voyage made excessively long by frequent car problems. They spent the next 12 days in the Southern California area visiting friends and fishing. They even went down to Tiajuana and Agua Caliente. Surprisingly they did not visit San Francisco or Yosemite. They started their return trip on 8/27 from San Bernardino. They went through Bryce Canyon and Salt Lake City. Wyoming Nebraska Illinois Ohio and finally home. For each day the author notes the mileage sights seen restaurants and accommodations.They visited numerous reservations along the way likely to check on their co-religionists. They also must have been somewhat young as they often stayed at AAA campgrounds. The AAA is frequently mentioned; repair shops campgrounds hotels restaurants. The frequency of car problems is astounding. On a separate smaller sheet the writer listed all their expenses for the trip and other statistics. For example; the car got 16.8 miles to the gallon and the average cost of gas was 20.7 cents per gallon N.p. unknown

Third edition of the scarce 1911 dealer catalogue for this early American Brass Era luxury car which was produced from 1900 to 1925 the year that the Knight sleeve engine was introduced. Stearns was the first American automobile to use the sleeve valve Knight engine also used at the time by Daimler in England Mercedes in Germany Panhard in France and Minerva in Belgium. These models include the Stearns-Knight Touring Car Toy Tonneau Runabout Roadster Landaulet and Limousine. Of special interest is the laid-in promotion and order form for the “Working Model of the Stearns-Knight Engine†constructed of heavy cardboard and lithographed for better instructing service departments and mechanics of the Stearns-Knight. In addition they sold toilet cases limousine megaphone speaking tubes swing window fixtures limousine side lamps laces hearse trimmings and more. The course was set up on the old city streets of Vanport which was had served as World War II era shipyard labor housing. Destroyed in 1948 by a failed dike and flood the empty streets and depopulated ghost town were converted into Delta Park with sport venues and race track. The newly-formed Cascade Sports Car Club set up the race course straight through a swamp with a wooden bridge that required the organizers to keep scuba divers on standby to rescue wrecked drivers. The “See America First†campaign emerged out of the confluence of the “Good Roads†movement the expanding interest in early automobile travel and the land promotion efforts by businessmen and boosters to encourage tourism from the East to the West by advertising the opportunities resources and grandeur of the American landscape. The slogan was adopted by the railroads the National Parks concessionaires guide book publishers automobile and rail tour operators and commercial clubs appearing on posters brochures postcards decals colouring books puzzles and souvenirs of all types. Automobile travel encouraged and facilitated by massive road building and improvement projects across the United States during the opening decades of the 20th-Century enabled travelers of limited means the ability to experience the grandeur of the American countryside and still drive themselves and even camp in their automobile. The first was on the Lookout Mountain and Circle Route of 57 miles long featuring 412 dangerous curves where he maintined an average speed of 44.91 miles per hour and was able to make the run in 1 hour 16 minutes clipping over 1 minute off the previous record and the next week drove the Pike’s Peak course in 28 minutes 49 seconds fastest time ever made by a stock car. The 1925 Oldsmobile Six Model 30-C sported a 169 cubic inch 6-cylinder flathead engine a modernized radiator and Fisher Body coachwork. No copies in Worldcat. First edition of this well-illustrated dealer catalogue promoting the very scarce 1942 Plymouths which included the P14S for the less expensive models and the P14C for the top of the line. Plymouth had begun early production of the 1942 models because it was evident at the end of 1941 that automobile production would be taking a back seat to military orders. The 1942 models received a more massive look running boards were concealed by the lower part of the door grille bars were reduced to just 5 heavy bars and a more massive bumper protected the front license plate. Only 152427 were produced before the assembly line was shut down for war production January 31 1942. Of particular interest is the beautiful illustration for the 1942 DeLuxe Woodie Station Wagon. The piece includes photos of bathing at Tokeland Beach streets at Ilwaco the fish hatchery in Chinook the huge lumber mill in Raymond as well as the South Bend waterfront. When the map was drawn and printed there were sections of the state highway on the Washington side which were still gravel and unimproved and it marks as well the areas where ferries were needed for crossing.
