A real photo postcard with a photograph of an Asian family relaxing by the side of the road near what appears to be a 1917 Ford Model T Touring car or similar the stamp box dates the postcard to 1904–1917. The youngest child wears a pair of driving goggles. At the time touring by car was a novelty often involving navigating poor unpaved roads and pulling over to camp right beside one’s car. unknown

The “See America First†campaign emerged out of the confluence of the “Good Roads†movement the expanding interest in early automobile travel and the land promotion efforts by businessmen and boosters to encourage tourism from the East to the West by advertising the opportunities resources and grandeur of the American landscape. The slogan was adopted by the railroads the National Parks concessionaires guide book publishers automobile and rail tour operators and commercial clubs appearing on posters brochures postcards decals colouring books puzzles and souvenirs of all types. Automobile travel encouraged and facilitated by massive road building and improvement projects across the United States during the opening decades of the 20th-Century enabled travelers of limited means the ability to experience the grandeur of the American countryside and still drive themselves and even camp in their automobile. The work incorporates short humor stories of the Brass Era motorist previously published in the magazine and Williams’ silhouette illustrations outlined and filled in with black were similar in appearance to models used in Chinese shadow theatre. Williams 1888-1982 would later become well known for developing Michelin tire’s advertising campaigns during the Roaring 20’s featuring his cartoon character “Bibendum†often advising consumers on the advantages of Michelin tires. The Wenzel Poleless Auto Touring tent was designed to be rolled up and erected using guy wires flexible ridge member with adjustable lever and three-section steel tubing for each end allowing it to be adjustable as well as portable. Also featured are Boys Camp tents miner or teepee tents large stable tents and Gospel or Circus tents. Wenzel 1850-1922 was a German-American who originally arrived in the U.S. in 1866 and launched a sailmaking business in Massachusetts followed by an awning business in St. Louis MO but by the end of the 19th-Century had moved to producing a significant line of camping tents auto camping tents and still produces as part of the Exxel Outdoors Co. a wide array of camping tents and waterproof sleeping bags and outdoor gear. First edition stated of this excellent account of the author’s follow-up automobile/truck expedition to his “Across Unknown Australia†which featured deep drives into the deserts of the Northern Territory and Western Australia this time driving two Guy Roadless Vehicles fitted with trailers along with an AJS motorcycle and sidecar. The British Guy trucks were rugged featuring 4-cylinder engines fitted with a detachable cylinder head and 4-speed gearbox and fitted with caterpillar tracks. The half-tracks were prone to serious wear in the desert sand eating through bushings and selals and slowed them down quite a bit. They followed Sturt Creek past Lake Stretch Billiluna Homestead and onto Gregory’s Salt Sea Lake Gregory and then the little used Canning Stock Route to Well 48. After reaching Yeeda they crossed the Fitzroy River and then onto Broome. Unfortunately the film produced during the expedition “Grip of the Wanderlust†and shown to the then Prince of Wales later King Edward VIII has now been lost. This guide combines elements of the earlier Photo-mobile Western travel guides with mileage information phone numbers and images of the well-appointed motels. A profusely illustrated promotional catalogue for this driving school in Cleveland which claimed to be the oldest of its kind in the United States. Packed with testimonials descriptions of classes and images from photographs this volume shows off the institution's many benefits. Laid in are several ephemeral items related to the school including a flyer advertising free airplane rides for students of the school and a sign-up form and unused envelope for would-be students. A small handful of similar catalogues are held by local institutions per OCLC but this one with "18th year" at the beginning of the title appears to be unlocated. A great piece of automotive history dating from the era when Cleveland rivaled Detroit in the automotive manufacturing space. (self-published) unknown
