194063647New York: Viking Press 1940. 8vo. 299 1 pp. Tan publisher’s cloth w/ d.j. wraparound pictorial map cover art slight chipping head of spine minor scuffing edgewear still a NF/VG book w/ original publicity tour photo laid-in by Ossip Garber 1889-1951 of New York. First edition of this surprisingly scarce work based on the author’s observations and oral interviews with laborers and unemployed across the United States as she drove in a borrowed automobile from Los Angeles to Seattle and then onto Michigan and finally in to the Jim Crow plagued deep South in 1939. Strong 1885-1970 was a fervent labor supporter the first woman to hold public office in Washington State one of the earliest anywhere as a Seattle School Board Member where she pursued an aggressive Progressive agenda was radicalized by the events of the Everett Massacre in 1916 subsequently faced an election recall in 1918 due to her radical and antiwar views and was actually nearly indicted during World War I speaking against the War. She built a career as a journalist supporting the I.W.W. Wobblies helped promote the 1919 Seattle General Strike and finally in 1921 moved to the Soviet Union because she despaired of any meaningful change in the U.S. labor policies. She worked in the Soviet Union for Hearst’s International Magazine for the John Reed Colony and published “Children of Revolution†in 1924; traveled the World and even in 1935 met Eleanor Roosevelt. Following publication of the book and brief return to Moscow she returns to the U.S. empties her Seattle House and sells it by 1942 works for a few months for MGM in Hollywood lectures at Stanford and from 1958-1970 she spent the end of her life living in China. Although undated the automobiles are primarily the 1940’s designs before automakers had made the shift to post-War production and there is mention of the itinerary from Puebla to Oaxaca that there are no hotels completed on that route as yet because it had just been completed saving many hours of driving time. First editions of these exceedingly scarce post-World War I catalogues encouraging automotive farm tractor & heavy equipment and airplane technical training for young men as a way to get ahead in these burgeoning new industries. The automotive industry at the beginning of the 1920’s and aviation were both fast growing technically advanced industries and significant training was required to train not only those building maintaining and driving vehicles farm tractors and airplanes but also instructing them in sales methods for dealerships dealership management and sales forces. Of special interest was Greer’s interest in recruiting potential women drivers mechanics and specialists to train as another occupation possibly as a result of the growth of such training during World War I. Erwin Greer 1882-1960 also operated a Chicago automotive dealership selling Maxwell’s Ford’s and other badges and had founded the college by 1902 in order to train drivers for his potential new clients as well as future automobile dealership salesmen. His technical training school later expanded by the late 1920’s to include electronics and electrical engineering students and would graduate over 80000 students by his death. The school would eventually be absorbed into the Lincoln Tech group of training schools in 1969 and still operates several different automotive and technology programs. No copies in Worldcat. First edition of this exceedingly scarce brochure touting automobile tours and ascent of Mount Rainier also issued by Nowell under the title of “Souvenir of Mount Tacoma.†Images include Mirror Lake automobile on Government road touring cars filed with passengers driving through the rustic log entrance parked at the National Park Inn as well as climing the glaciers on Mt. Rainier and even “Snowballing†snow ball fights. Asahel Curtis 1874-1941 was one of three founders of The Mountaineers organized climbs through the Cascades and by 1917 had become chief guide at Mount Rainier National Park. His studio output was prodigious and many of his images of Mount Rainier include the Curtis & Miller studio credit of when he partnered with Miller. Frank H. Nowell 1864-1950 began gold mining with his father Thomas Nowell on Douglas Island around 1886 and in 1900 went to Nome where he turned his photography hobby into a profession later becoming the official photographer for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. Blue pictorial publisher’s cloth w/ image on front cover of General Booth’s 1906 Thomas Flyer touring car white lettering lsight scuffing minor shelfwear still VG bright copy. First edition of this informative work tracing the route and adventure in August 1904 as Salvation Army co-founder William Booth embraced the brand new motorized contraption traveling from Land’s End England to Aberdeen Scotland. The 1904 Thomas Flyer touring car was accompanied by a 1904 Thomas Tonneau touring car but Boot’s was painted white in order to attract more attention. Booth stopped off in cities towns and villages to preach to assembled crowds eager to hear the Methodist preacher’s message and the novelty of the automobiles was key. At the time less than 23000 motor cars were owned in all of Great Britain and as noted by the London Transport Museum over 98% of the vehicles in the London streets were drawn by the more than 300000 horses maintained in the urban area at the time. Colour-decorated limp covers striking Art Deco cover art lettering in red white blue & silver on English racing green field wire spiral binding as issued NF copy. First edition of this scarce promotional catalogue touting the storied English Racing Automobiles Ltd. E.R.A. founded in Nov. 1933 and manufactured 18 single seater racing cars capable of competing against most major race car manufacturers in motorsports at the time. The E.R.A.’s used 1.1 liter 1.5 liter and 2 liter supercharged engines competing in the Voiturette classes and were particularly designed for hill climbs and won many “Small Car†races. Of the original 18 ever built 17 still survive today although many have been heavily modified and experienced changes to blowers suspension brakes and styling to remain on the cutting edge. Their efforts were rewarded in 1935 by placing 1st 3rd 4th & 5th at the prestigious Nurburgring “Voiturette†class race in 1935. No original copies in Worldcat.
