An exceptional pair of automobile travel albums composed of platinum print photographs by Dr. E. Stevens apparently presented to fellow Royal Photographic Society member and platinum photograph enthusiast H.W. Child. The motor car was a grey 1912 35 CWT Delaunay-Belleville depicted in 15 of the images bore the GB License Plate of BP1945 registered in 1912 to Charles Stevens c/o Dr. Stevens of Sarcelles Horsham West Sussex July 4 1912. The Delaunay-Belleville in the Brass Era was one of the most expensive and prestigious touring cars for travelers and enthusiasts whose owners at the time included Evalyn Walsh McLean original owner of the Hope Diamond as well as Mann who traveled “Round the World†in 1912 in a similar model. The intrepid travelers clearly intended to photograph and put their new motor through its paces traveling about 3000 miles. The album opens with photos of the auto loaded at Portsmouth and by ferry to Le Havre and then driving down through Normandy Alencon Le Mans Tours Bordeaux and onto Biarritz. The tour extended across the Pyrenees into Spain visiting San Sebastian followed by drives to Pau Lourdes Toulouse Narbonne and then along the South of France into Italy. The drive was not without pitfalls as they suffered punctured tires with two different images showing repairs one with a crowd as well as the photo waiting for a massive rock slide of giant boulders fallen onto the roadway and being removed by wooden wheelbarrows. They continued their tour across the Alps into Switzerland with views of the travelers at a Swiss border station and then capturing scenic vistas and driving onto Salzburg & Linz. One of the images captures advertising and awning of a “Buchdruckerei†specializing in photographic books supplies and photo albums. At that point the motorists had reached the most Eastern point and drove along the Danube route crossing overland to the river Necker Heidelberg and finally into the Netherlands with visits of Amsterdam Haarlem often with picturesque images capturing the Dutch in their iconic wooden shoes windmills canals and even electric railways. One particular image documents the “Art Store†selling Volendam silver & brass and antiques. The final image shows the car being loaded back on the steamship to England from Rotterdam. The platinum photographs were processed by James A. Sinclair & Co. Ltd. at 34 Haymarket in London specializing in photographic prints & equipment and at the time the Platinum prints were Alfred Stieglitz’s process of choice celebrating the images for their aesthetic qualities and permanence. As the Platinum prints were printed direction on coated paper with platinum salts the image was absorbed directly into the paper creating a softer and less-detailed image which was quite durable. Dr. Stevens fl. 1910-1918 who during World War I served as surgeon with the Royal Army Medical Corps joined the Royal Photographic Society in 1915 and exhibited three of his photographs presumably from this excursion including “In the Paese†“Making Port Concarneu†and “Santa Maria della Pace Lago di Como.†Child b. 1859 was a very successful merchant who by 1897 was also an active member of the Royal Photographic Society Platinum print enthusiast and automobile traveler as well. He exhibited several times with the RPS often appearing in their exhibitions from 1898-1915 the last being “Citadel and Church Dinant†shot in 1914 and displayed as an Autochrome. These maps depict the burgeoning highway and national road system which had been fostered by urban centers attempting to convince rural municipalities to replace their seasonal dirt roads with those of gravel or crushed stone and facilitate much greater movement of agricultural and manufacturing products across the continent and with the U.S. The Atlantic map stretches from the maritime provinces down to Washington D.C. and over to Niagara Falls and Buffalo NY; The Middle West map documents the main automobile roads and highways from Port Albert to Port Arthur and South from Denver to St. Louis indicating provincial federal and state roads and highways; The Great Lakes section tracks the extensive network of roads and highways surrounding the Great Lakes including those in Iowa Kentucky Wisconsin New York and the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario; while the Pacific Map records the highways from San Francisco to Denver and up through Alberta and over to British Columbia. First edition of this very rare dealer’s promotional brochure extolling the advantages and beauty of the 1935 Hupmobile Series 518 sedan wearing the distinctive Raymond Loewy designs. These Hupmobiles were attractive comfortable and reliable and renowned for their rounded lines sloping frilles headlights that flared in the fenders and the split “Sea Gull†front bumpers. The 1935 featured new “Mouse Ear†vents on the hood sides and a mesh grille. Unfortunately the popularity of the styles attracted a hostile takeover of the company and after fending off the attempt and unable to secure a Federal Reserve Loan the company ceased production in late Dec. 1935. First edition of this nicely executed jigsaw puzzle automobile safety advertisement touting the 1920’s innovations by the U.S. Rubber Co. tires with this one featuring “Cog Wheel Traction and tempered rubber to ensure traction in rainy driving conditions. The puzzle depicts a boy and overturned wagon at an intersection underneath the bumper of a 1920’s sedan being admonished by a dapperly dressed driver. U.S. Rubber Co. one of the original 12 stocks listed on the Dow Jones originally produced rubber gloves and rubber footwear and by the 1920’s were producing automobile tires. They later purchased Gillette Safety Tire Co. and are now known as the Uniroyal brand. Clifton 1892-1957 began as chauffeur for the Venice CA police department before World War I and later owned a popular service station with Marshall 1894-1974 until the Great Depression when he went to work as landscaper for a movie studio while Marshall would become an automotive parts store owner. His studio output was prodigious and many of his images of Mount Rainier include the Curtis & Miller studio credit of when he partnered with Miller. Frank H. Nowell 1864-1950 began gold mining with his father Thomas Nowell on Douglas Island around 1886 and in 1900 went to Nome where he turned his photography hobby into a profession later becoming the official photographer for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. First edition of this exceedingly scarce promotional catalogue from Art Sparks whose introduction details the efforts to radically compete with the new-found supremacy of the Lotus-Ford race cars and in conjunction with Douglas Aircraft and Sparks engines design a competitive car. In 1966 the USAC regulations required Indianapolis race cars to feature open-wheel design with maximum width of 75 in. and minimum wheelbase of 96 in. and 4.2 litre engines with 2.8 litre superchargers. The legendary innovator applied his famed ForgedTrue pistons which when used in other engines powered 11 consecutive Indianapolis 500 race winners. Sparks 1901-1987 was a pioneering silent movie and talkie professional driver stuntman including Howard Hughes’ epic Hells Angels raced on outlaw dirt tracks and began competing with Stubby Stubblefield Bill Cummins and Rex Mays on West Coast Tracks. He designed Stubby’s “The Catfish†aerodynamic race car which placed 6th in the 1932 Indy 500 and later began working with Thorne Engineering to develop George Robson’s 1946 Indy 500 winner. First edition of this exceedingly scarce dealership salesmen’s hand book for Durant Motors Star Four Star Six automobiles and commercial vehicles introducing their newly introduced 6-cylinder engine. The Star Six produced 40 horsepower and had a 107-inch wheelbase with models including the Star Six Touring Star Six Sport Coupe Coupe Coach Roadster Landau and Sedan all designed and priced to compete with similar Chevy and Ford Models. Durant Motors was founded in 1921 by William Durant after he lost control of General Motors and in the subsequent years built and sold cars assembled from parts manufactured by other suppliers with the intent of building a company that rivaled GM and Chevrolet. This salesman’s hand book describes and illustrates the Durant “New Star Four†Model F which when introduced in 1925 featured the Continental 35 horsepower engine and was very popular. This salesmen’s book includes specific Retail Order forms detailing the price of car freight financing insurance how to push sales through garage owners cultivate Star Car owners as rolling advertising salesman 129 Star Quality Features over competitor’s automobiles low operating costs and pushing the newly introduced Compound Fleetruck commercial truck vehicles. Along with specifics on the factory sales organization the dealership sign is depicted along with specific instructions on developing service/lubrication schedules with new others. This line-up continued into 1927 but Durant began running into capitalization problems and sold his Flint MI plant to GM and in 1927 sold his Long Island City plant to Ford and suspended the Durant Motor Car production in 1927 although the Star continued to be produced with over 70000 sold in 1927. Sales continued to drop in 1928-1929 and by 1932 ceased production and by 1932 Durant was wiped out by the Great Depression. The colour plate shows the officially accepted ACA flag for businesses hanging from its’ bracket and the map specifies the coverage of tours stretching from Maine to Chicago and down to Maryland. The route instructions read similarly to a “Hieroglyphic Bible†with road instruction symbols demarcating routes trolley lines grade crossings RR Bridges speed limits and mileage markers. The ACA was the first automobile club formed in America in 1899 and advocated for and against automobile regulations improving “Good Roads†with the Good Roads Movement and were the U.S. sponsors for International Auto Racing. First edition of this scarce Dealer’s showroom brochure for the 1947-1948 Chrysler passenger cars which were minor updates to the 1942 models following World War II and would continue to be produced until the appearance of the “Second Series 1949†in mid-1949. The “Woodie†Town and Country 4-door Sedan and the 2-door Custom Club Coupe’s were wildly popular and Chrysler actually outsold Ford from 1946-1948 by over 400000 cars. The Electra 225 was a very popular model resembled nothing else rolled out of General Motor factories featured power brakes & power steering panorama windshields and the swooping tailfin design.
