First edition of this uncommon Montana Highway Map prepared on the eve of the Great Depression by the Montana Highway Engineer Rader who held the post 1929-1931. The Highway Map Co. was noted for their policy of “Free Highway Maps†sponsored by independent gas stations and roadside stands in the 1920’s through 1940’s. Highway Map Co., unknown
1930List2430Topeka 1930. Folded map measuring 28 x 17 inches. Some small tears at folds very good. Very Good. A scarce depression-era map of Oklahoma with graphic advertisements to the verso showing the range of automobile-centric establishments in the state at the time. The map shows all the automobile routes of the time with text along the borders listing the towns and the telephone numbers of various services and lodging options. The instructions on the the top read “Put Out Your Fires / Leave a Clean Camp / Keep the Streams Pure / Don’t Be a Road Hog.†According to the single copy in OCLC at the Denver Public Library the map was printed in 1930 though we see no date on the map itself. The depression hit Oklahoma following the drought in 1930 which also coincided with the opening of the East Texas oil field. This map is a relic of the period just before the state’s economic downturn with the early automobile infrastructure still intact and vibrant. unknown

First edition of this uncommon third automobile/truck expedition which equipped with two 6-wheel Morris trucks started in Port Hedland May 1928 and then drving via De Grey Pardoo and Wallal homesteads north to Broome. After Broome they pushed onto Fitzroy Crossing and Hall Creek hunting gold and then reached the Tanami goldfields and then prospected along the Lander River visiting Brooks’ Soak a traditional Warlpiri Soak which Fred Brook was illegally appropriating. Their mining expedition overlapped the subsequent tragic Conniston Massacres of Australian Warlpiri Anmatyerre and Kaytetye Indigenous Peoples in retribution for the killing of Fred Brooks. Terry’s party quickly moved on and headed to Alice Springs followed the Finke River to Horseshoe Bend Oodnadatta Hawker Adelaide and later Melbourne. Terry was quite taken with the Morris trucks which averaged 5-18 mpg every 250 miles and the lead truck only suffered 41 flat tires in their Dunlop tires. First edition of this very scarce dealer catalogue promoting the Plymouth P11 series DeLuxe models including the Traffic Master Special DeLuxe 2-door Sedan Convertible Coupe and 7-Passenger Sedan with illustration at end of the Special Deluxe Woody Wagon. The 1941 models featured a 201 6-cylinder engine 3-speed manual transmission and steel body. Large colour lithograph map 35 x 50 in. varnished colour lithograph on thick paper stock cut into 4 separate strips and folded resulting 32 pp. booklet. Publisher’s beige-coloured flexible covers 3-post split-pin binder old scotch tape repairs head & foot of spine minor creasing to corners still a VG copy w/ the map in excellent condition w/ no tears. First edition of this map devised by the Ralph Heald for his company which operated initially as Heald-Menerey and then Heald & Walkup as the first of its kind for automobile airplane and office use. The map shows hard surface highways main & improved highways roads trails steam & electric railways rivers lakes dry lakes aqueducts lighthouses county lines and more. The format of this predecessor to the modern Thomas guide provided a convenient portable map for early 1930’s travelers to reference with the state divided into four East to West strips. This map was executed originally around 1930 as the Portland Railway Light & Power CO. interurban is still shown between Vancouver WA and Portland OR. Heald 1898-1974 was a World War I veteran who operated a successful map and real estate survey publishing business into the Great Depression but by the beginning of World War II is listed as unemployed and we could find no employment records after that. Enyon in ink on verso of front fly-leaf pencil notes on final blank.Very rare sole edition of this all-encompassing motoring guidebook for Northern India with information on distances road quality garages hotels other infrastructure and hints for sight-seeing. The fist section of the volume describes the automobile association which was founded in 1927 its organizational structure statutes eminent members rules and regulations. This is followed by a list of towns their elevation and population together with guest houses and hotels and their prices garages descriptions of hill roads all with town plans. Somewhat tautological the next section lists more hotels dak bungalows government-run guest houses petrol stations and garages registered by the Association and hospitals. This is followed by a historical section and practical hints for morists including the relevant laws.LibraryHub locates a single copy in the British Library ascribing the authorship to one H. J.
