19107908Winnipeg Manitoba: The Winnipeg Canoe Club N.D. Circa 1910-1915. Softcover. A finely preserved early 20th-century tobacco silk likely issued as a collectible measuring 8.5 x 8.5 cm. Printed on square white silk featuring fringed borders along the top and bottom edges. Bears a lovely lithographed print of a slanted wooden flagpole flying a white triangular pennant bearing the interlaced stylized "WCC" monogram of the Winnipeg Canoe Club housed within a solid red circle. Pictured in the foreground is a lightly colored sketch of a canoe resting on calm blue-green water set against a faint sky in the background. Centered beneath the image is the caption "WINNIPEG CANOE CLUB" with "WINNIPEG MAN." directly below in a classic serif type. A small series number "25" is printed in the extreme lower-left corner possibly denoting its sequence in a broader collectors set of cigarette silks. Quite rare and uncommon Winnipeg Canoe Club ephemera. Near fine.

¶ Often referred to as "cigarette silks" or "tobacco silks" these small textiles were highly popular promotional inserts distributed within tobacco packaging - frequently by manufacturers like Imperial Tobacco - to build brand loyalty during the early part of the last century. Consumers routinely collected them to stitch into parlor quilts pillows or decorative table runners. The Winnipeg Canoe Club paperback
